Academic All-Stars – Pearre Creek Elementary

Published March 27, 2015

Nine-year-old William Mueller has come a long way since the start of the school year.

By his own admission, William was not an enthusiastic reader when he began third grade at Pearre Creek Elementary. But thanks to a lot of hard work and the support of his teachers, William is now reading at the top of his class.

“When William arrived at Pearre Creek, his reading skills were very low,” said Principal Dr. Stephanie Chatham. “At this time, he is now working toward becoming a member of our Million Word Club.”

Chatham says William accomplished this feat by dedicating himself to improving his reading skills. It’s a big reason why teachers and staff at Pearre Creek selected him as the school’s Academic All-Star.

“We are so proud to have William at Pearre Creek,” said Chatham. “He is a great citizen in our school. William is always on task in the classroom, as well as being helpful and kind to others.”

William’s favorite subject used to be math, but now that he’s become an avid reader, he says it’s literacy.

“I started out reading two-page books this year,” said William. “Now I’m reading the Heroes of Olympus series. I also just finished the Percy Jackson series. I just like to read a lot.”

When asked how he accomplished so much in such a short time span, William credits the help of his teacher, Ellen Costello, and literacy coach, Joy Scurlock. He says his competitive nature played a role as well.

“I just think of it as a competition, and I always want to do better if it’s a competition,” said William. “So I just try my best.”
