Academic All-Star – Renaissance High
Published February 26, 2015
What a difference a year can make. Just ask Renaissance High School sophomore Hank Brainard.
This time last year, Hank was struggling to find his way as a freshman at one of the district’s largest schools. Knowing a change was needed, Hank applied to Renaissance High and was accepted.
According to Hank, the move to Renaissance has been one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
“I’m really happy to be here,” said Hank. “The people are so different. They’re so much more accepting, and the teachers are just amazing. They really care about you.”
The teachers and staff at Renaissance say Hank’s personality and professionalism played a big role in him being named the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2014-15 school year.
“Hank always pushes himself to do his very best and volunteers to help others whenever possible,” said Renaissance High Principal Dr. Brian Bass. “He is always thoughtful, unassuming, has a great sense of humor, and is eternally positive.”
While he doesn’t have a favorite subject, Hank’s favorite class is creative writing. That makes sense considering Hank wants to be a filmmaker when he gets older.
“I like to write,” said Hank. “I watch a lot of movies, and I write films. I have always enjoyed movies, so there was just a point where I said, ‘Why don’t I make them?'”
In the meantime, Hank says he’ll keep doing all the things that led the teachers and staff at Renaissance to name him as the school’s Academic All-Star.
“I’m absolutely honored by this award,” said Hank. “I can’t believe it. It’s a big surprise, but I’m very grateful.”
