Academic All-Star – Page Middle

Published April 2, 2015

Page Middle School eighth grader Savannah Garrett knows all about overcoming adversity.

While the last year has been tough in more ways than one, Savannah has remained steadfast in her effort to reach her fullest potential. It’s that effort that led administrators and staff at Page Middle to name Savannah as their Academic All-Star for the 2014-15 school year.

“Savannah is one of the hardest working students I have ever taught,” said math teacher Tabitha Durham. “When she came in this year she was lacking confidence. It was tough, but Savannah is relentless in her work ethic, and to watch her blossom into a more confident student has been one of the greatest success stories I’ve seen in my 10 years of teaching.”

Savannah attributes much of that success to the amazing staff at Page Middle, who she says have been by her side through thick and thin.

“They have amazing teachers at Page Middle,” said Savannah. “It’s also just a safe environment, and you feel like nothing can harm you when you’re inside this school.”

Not only has Savannah seen success in the classroom but she was also part of the Page High Color Guard’s state championship squad last fall. As for a future career, Savannah says she might like to be a pediatrician one day.

“I just feel for the kids that sometimes don’t get three meals a day and don’t always have a roof over their head,” said Savannah. “I just want to make sure they’re healthy.”

As she prepares to move on to ninth grade next year, Savannah says she’ll use this award as motivation, knowing that good things happen when you focus on what’s important.

“You might think that you’re going unnoticed but you’re not,” said Savannah. “It feels nice to be loved and to know that someone cares about you and they care about your academics and your life. It’s really great to have this award!”
