Academic All-Star – Fairview High
Published January 30, 2015
Fairview High School Senior Savannah Hester knows a thing or two about overcoming adversity.
After a rocky start, Savannah’s high school career is back on track thanks to her steadfast determination. That hard work has not gone unnoticed by the teachers and staff at Fairview High who selected her as the school’s Academic All-Star.
“Savannah had a difficult time academically during her freshman and sophomore year,” said Principal Dr. Juli Oyer. “During her junior year she did a complete 180 and has flourished. Not only has she been successful academically but she also represented Fairview High School in HOSA. She placed first in regional and state for medical terminology and went on to represent Fairview High on the national level this past summer. This Academic All-Star has a bright future ahead of her!”
Savannah credits much of her turn-around to the teachers at Fairview High.
“Ninth and tenth grades were a struggle for me,” said Savannah. “I have social anxiety so I completely missed the second semester of ninth and tenth grade, and I’ve been working extremely hard to make up all of those credits. The staff and the teachers here are so willing to help me. Just knowing they care about me and my success has been a big inspiration.”
Savannah says her love for health science also played a big role.
“When I went to the state HOSA tournament, it was the first time I ever did anything really big in my life,” said Savannah. “It was a great experience and it gave me confidence in myself.”
Savannah hopes to defend her title at this year’s state HOSA tournament which will be March 19-21. As for life after high school, Savannah would like to have a career in the medical field and become a respiratory therapist. It’s a goal she knows she can attain if she keeps working hard.
“I’ve learned it is possible to overcome struggle and do something you actually want to do no matter how much you messed up before,” said Savannah. “You can turn it around, and if you do the best you can, you will be successful.”
