Academic All-Star – Chapman’s Retreat Elementary

Published December 19, 2014

Known for her determination, cheerfulness and reliability, 10-year-old Madalene Leigh is a favorite among students and staff at Chapman’s Retreat Elementary School.

Administrators say the fifth grader is a hard-working student who always gives her best, which is why she was recently chosen as the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2014-15 school year.

“Madalene dedicates her time and energy to her work,” said CRES Principal Carol Garrett. “She is one of the most responsible students in her class. She brings back anything needed for school, completes school tasks without needing a reminder and is an active member of Cheetah Council. Madalene will always be at the top of our All-Star list because of her positive attitude, responsibility, and determination.”

Madalene has attended Chapman’s Retreat since kindergarten and says her favorite subject is math. She also enjoys performing in the school chorus and being a member of the Cheetah Council.

“The Cheetah Council is where you make yourself a role model for the younger kids at school,” said Madalene. “I like it because we get to help people. We set up fundraisers like the food drive we had before Thanksgiving where we collected over 3,000 cans of food for the needy.”

Outside of school, Madalene likes to play with friends and take care of her pets which include a frog, a dog and some fish.

“I have loved animals since I was little,” said Madalene. “I want to be either a veterinarian or a zoologist when I grow up so that I can help people with their pets.”

When it comes to her education, Madalene doesn’t have to look far for inspiration.

“My parents motivate me because they did well in school and went to a nice college,” said Madalene. “I’d like to follow in their footsteps and go to a good college too.”
