9 Reasons Why It’s Great to be a WCS Student

Published January 9, 2015

9. Our teachers make school fun! WCS students enjoy coming to school. The K-12 student attendance for 2013-14 was 99.6 percent, according to the 2013-2014 Tennessee Department of Education Report Card, surpassing the Tennessee Department of Education goal of 93 percent.

8. Access to wonderful educational opportunities. WCS is ranked as the highest achieving district in the state according to the 2014 TCAP results. During first semester, 27 of our schools were named Reward Schools by the Tennessee Department of Education; one of our schools won the SCORE prize; and three of our schools were named National Blue Ribbon Schools.

7. Our students are college ready! WCS once again earned the highest average ACT composite score in the state. The district’s graduating class of 2014 posted an ACT composite score of 23.5, up 0.1 points from 2013 and a step closer to achieving the School Board goal of 24. Williamson County Schools also outscored the state average of 19.8 (19.3 for public schools) and the national average of 21.

6. Access to amazing athletic opportunities. Last semester, WCS won three state championships – one in volleyball and two in competitive cheerleading (Ravenwood and Centennial)! WCS is also home to the 2014 Tennessee Cheerleader of the Year.

5. Our bands, orchestras and choirs are rocking out, literally! A total of 162 students were accepted to the 2014-15 All-State/Mid-State bands and orchestras in grades 7-12. Of those students, 19 were selected to multiple ensembles or on multiple instruments. A total of 67 students were accepted to the All-State/Mid-State High School choirs.

4. You might see your artwork in a museum one day. A total of 64 students received recognition at the Middle TN Scholastic Art Competition in 2014. Artwork submitted to the competition had to be created from January – December 2014. The regional winners celebration and exhibition is Saturday, January 31 at the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art.

3. Watch out, Broadway! More than 25 full plays or musicals are performed annually in WCS middle and high schools.

2. Our students achieve national accomplishments. A total of 30 Williamson County students were named National Merit Semifinalists during the 2014-15 school year. WCS also had two U.S. Army All-American game participants: one played football for the EAST team, and one played the tuba in the halftime show. Two students attended the National Congress for Future Medical Leaders, and one of them was inducted into the Torch and Laurel Society and received the Award of Excellence.

1. YOU. The students, parents, teachers, staff and community of WCS make our district what it is. Without your relentless spirit, rigorous expectations, work ethic and ability to foster and grow relationships, we wouldn’t be where we are today. As the New Year starts, let’s continue to achieve and excel within our school walls, within our community, across our great state and nationwide. Happy 2015, WCS community!
