Young Men of Heritage Program Provides Life Lessons at HMS

Published June 20, 2014

A new program is teaching eighth grade boys at Heritage Middle School how to be leaders in both their school and community. The program is called Young Men of Heritage, and it was started last year by PTO President Kim Stone.

"We are incredibly fortunate to have our parents support the character education of our young men in such an amazing way," said HMS Principal Marlena Gross Taylor. "Here at HMS, we stress to the students the importance of being a positive influence in their school, family and community. Kim’s Young Men of Heritage program not only provides an opportunity for our eighth grade young men to be leaders and serve others, but also includes a support group for the mothers focused on raising great boys to be exceptional men.”

The students volunteer their time by participating in numerous service projects which include painting, yard-work and other tasks. They also performed an "anti-bully" skit for the talent show. Stone says the group is focused on building character and cultivating a love for the community.

“We just finished a work day for a teacher, and it was an amazing day," said Stone. "I thought getting the guys together during the summer would be difficult but we've had a great group show up to work. It was great seeing the guys work together.”
