WCS Student Named U.S. Presidential Scholar
Published May 9, 2014
Brentwood High School Senior Joyce Kang is one of 144 seniors nationwide who were named a 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholar. United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made the announcement May 5.
"These extraordinary young men and women have excelled in their educational, artistic and civic pursuits," said Duncan. "They show all of us that when students challenge themselves and commit themselves to excellence, the results can be astounding."
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.
Kang is no stranger to academic success. Earlier this year, she was named an Intel Science Talent Search finalist as well as a National Merit Finalist, and she received a second perfect ACT score of 36.
The U.S. Presidential Scholar award will be given to honorees during a special ceremony in Washington D.C. June 22. Each honoree will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion. A complete list of 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars follows and is available at http://www.ed.gov/psp.
