WCS Kicks Off Elementary World Language Program

More than 1,200 Williamson County students are getting the unique opportunity to study a second language before or after school. That's because they've enrolled in the district's new Elementary World Language program.
Classes for the fall semester began September 3, giving students who enrolled a chance to attend a language class one hour a week, before or after school, for 12 weeks. Students who enrolled were given the option of taking either Spanish or Chinese. Instructors say the program is off to a great start.
"We have 1,220 students in 126 language classes at 23 elementary schools each week," said WCS World Language Curriculum Specialist Christina Gilliland. "We had a wonderful first week of class. The school staffs have really made our language teachers feel welcome in their buildings. Everyone is having a good time singing songs and playing games all while learning new words and phrases in the target language."
Gilliland says the goal of the program is to provide students with high quality language instruction, which will allow them to develop communication skills in the target language and gain a greater understanding of diverse cultures.
Registration for the fall semester came to an end August 23. Spring semester registration will begin in December. Additional information about the program can also be found by visiting the Elementary World Language website at http://www.wcs.edu/SACC/ElementaryWorldLanguage.htm.
