Summit High Students Raise Funds for Habitat for Humanity

Published January 31, 2014

In few weeks, hundreds of high school students from across the district will begin work to put a roof over the head of a local low-income family through Habitat for Humanity. It’s all part of Williamson County’s Habitat High program.

One of the only three builds of its kind in the country, Habitat High is a way for students to get hands-on construction experience while donating their time to the community. In addition, students help raise the $70,000 needed to purchase the building supplies for the home.

At Summit High School in Spring Hill, students in the Habitat for Humanity Club have been busy raising funds for the build. Earlier this month, they organized the school’s first annual Mr. SHS All-Male Beauty Pageant and Talent Show, which raised approximately $1,000 from admissions. The light-hearted pageant featured events such as formal wear, interview and talent.

“It was a hilarious evening of fun for a great cause,” said teacher and club co-sponsor Deborah Bohn. “Every penny we raised will buy materials to build a new home for a deserving family in Williamson County.”

Members of the Summit High Habitat for Humanity Club have also been busy trying to raise money by selling coupon cards and setting up donation websites.

Once construction on the home begins, students will work on the build-site each Saturday and Sunday for five weeks. The work begins at 7:30 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. and includes all aspects of house construction, from laying plumbing and cutting baseboards to nailing shingles and painting walls.
