Student Spotlight Awards are given to Williamson County students who placed first in state or national competitions. Each Student Spotlight award winner is recognized before the School Board at its monthly meeting. Listed below are the district's Student Spotlight Award winners for the month of January.

Brentwood High Student Receives Numerous Awards

Brentwood High School student Joyce Kang was recently named an Intel Science Talent Search finalist. Kang is one of 40 finalists and the only one from Tennessee. The competition challenges high school students to formulate professional-grade research projects. Final judging will take place next month.

In addition, Kang was recently named as one of the county's record-tying 34 National Merit Finalists. Of the nearly 1.5 million entries, only 15,000 students nationwide earn this prestigious honor each year. In order to become a finalist, high school students must score well on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and meet other high standards set forth by the program.

Kang also achieved a perfect ACT score of 36 earlier this month, her second perfect ACT score.

Brentwood High School student Nisha Bhuva was recently named as one of the county's record-tying 34 National Merit Finalists. Page High Student Elected to the State Thespian Executive Advisory Board

Page High School student Doug Buckley was elected to the State Thespian Executive Advisory Board. This group of students manages the actions of the Tennessee chapter of the International Thespain Society. His teacher is Michelle Tripp.

Sunset Middle Student Wins State Poster Contest

Sunset Middle student Connor Graves was recently awarded first place in the Tennessee State Fire Marshal's 2013 Fire Safety Poster Contest. The contest required students to create an informational poster about kitchen fires, a leading cause of house fires and injuries in America. State level winners were award by grade level with Connor winning first place in sixth grade. His teacher is Nicole Church.
