PTO Leaders Meet with Superintendent

Published September 27, 2013

Growth, security and new construction. Those are just a few of the topics that were discussed at a September 23 meeting between Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney, PTO presidents and school principals.

Looney meets with PTO presidents from each school throughout the school year. The sessions provide an opportunity for sharing district information, while giving parents the chance to ask questions of district leadership. Parent leaders are encouraged to take notes and share information learned with their school communities.

At Monday's meeting, Looney told those in attendance that enrollment has gone up this year and that approximately 34,000 students are now enrolled in the district. He also updated them on plans for the new Nolensville area high school and construction on auditoriums at Brentwood High, Centennial High, Fairview Middle and Woodland Middle.

One of the highlights of the day came when the district gave away free, one-night stays at area hotels to various PTO groups. The idea came from WCS Ambassador Melinda Miller, who is the sales manager at Aloft Hotels-Cool Springs.

Since parent teacher organizations often give away free one-night hotel stays as part of their fundraising efforts, Miller created a program that allows parent organizations and Williamson County hoteliers to work together in a more efficient manner.

Using her connections in the industry, Miller collected close to $6,000 worth of free nights from area hotels including the Drury, Marriott, Hyatt and Embassy Suites for use in silent auctions, fundraising events or for professional development.

By way of drawing, the following 20 PTOs each received one free night for their fundraising programs:

  • Brentwood Middle
