Middle College Run for Relief 5K Raises $3,200 for Oasis Center

Published December 6, 2013

Months of hard work and planning came to an exciting conclusion November 21 as students from Middle College High School presented Oasis Center representatives with a check for $3,200. The money was raised through the Run for Relief 5K, which was created and organized by students at Middle College.

Students spent months planning every facet of the race, which was held November 16 in Franklin. Approximately 250 runners registered for the event, raising $4,200. The school donated 75 percent of the earnings to Oasis Center, which is a non-profit organization that helps young people with the transition to adulthood.

Middle College will use the remaining $1,000 to plan and pay for future project-based learning initiatives, which educators say provides students with valuable real-world lessons and experience.

"I am so proud of our students, who had to demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication to successfully orchestrate this 5K," said Principal Dr. Brian Bass. "Giving the work extrinsic value in the real world helped build intrinsic value for the work we did. Like all project-based learning ventures, the process is more important than the product."

On a side note, Middle College will host a winter Open House and Student Showcase Thursday, December 12 at 6:30 p.m. This event is open to all students and their parents interested in attending Middle College for the spring 2014 semester.
