Maintenance Crews Work to Repair Water Lines

Published March 14, 2014

It's another sign that spring is on its way. WCS maintenance workers recently began turning on water to outside restrooms and concession areas at schools across the district. Due to the colder than average winter, crews have found a larger number of split pipes, which they are working to repair.

"Our guys do a great job of winterizing our facilities," said WCS Maintenance Director Mark Samuels. "We use high powered air compressors to blow water out of the pipes; however due to the extreme temperatures we experienced this winter, we anticipated having more issues than usual."

According to Samuels, the district did not have to replace any broken pipes last year; whereas crews have already identified 28 split pipes this month.

Because of the breaks, Samuels says it may take slightly longer to get the water turned on at all of the schools, but maintenance crews are working as quickly as they can to limit the impact it could have on spring sports.

"We typically don't start turning on water at schools until the last week of March," said Samuels. "We began two weeks early this year because we anticipated we would need the extra time and weather predictions indicate warmer weather is on the way."
