Kiwanis Club Presents Area Teachers with Grants

Six Williamson County schools were recipients of grants by the Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill and Thompson's Station. The club made the official presentations during a breakfast January 14.

  • Allendale Elementary, Bethesda Elementary, Independence High, Longview Elementary, Spring Station Middle and Summit High will use the grants for various projects at their schools.
  • Allendale teachers Wendy Ryan and Joanna Salce each received a grant for $400. Ryan plans to use the money to increase math reinforcement opportunities for students through the implementation of a project called Math-U-See, while Salce wants to give her students a better understanding of literature by using Reader's Theater in the classroom.
  • Bethesda teachers Debbie Looper and Jodi Johnson will use their grant to research the history of Bethesda. The money will be used to purchase technology equipment that will allow students to conduct digitally recorded interviews with local residents and historians.
  • Longview Elementary received a total of four $400 grants. First grade teacher Donna Gallagher will use the funds to purchase science readers which will help integrate science into the literacy curriculum; first grade teacher Rosemary Casey will use the money to implement group and partner science activities; third grade teacher Meagan Boggs plans to use the money to create interactive literacy circles in the classroom; and math coach Lyn Fletcher will use the grant to support math instruction by integrating additional professional development for teachers.
  • Independence High gifted teacher Jackie Zigelsky says she'd like to use the funds to design creative educational lab experiences which emphasize, "constructivist ideas of learning."
  • Spring Station Middle School teacher Stacey DeBoe will use the $400 grant to implement a program called Project Empower which will bring general education and special education students together through a series of shared experiences and projects.
  • Summit High School teacher Amanda Muniz plans to use the grant to support the school's Project Support and Include (PSI) program which is used to teach and encourage students to be accountable, civil and empowered members of society.

The Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill and Thompson's Station provides Priority One Teacher Grants to area educators on an annual basis.
