BYOT Teacher Leaders Share Stories of Success at National Showcase

Published April 25, 2014

A group of Williamson County educators are helping teachers from around the nation learn new ways to enhance the instruction of math, science and technology.

It's part of the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) program which provides professional development and learning resources to schools that have instituted technology rich learning environments for students.

"Williamson County was one of the early BYOT adopters," said Helen Crompton, VILS consultant. "In the two years since the VILS grant began, WCS BYOT teacher leaders have greatly improved how mobile technology is being used in STEM throughout the district. Technology coaches have been key in supporting these teachers."

The VILS national showcase was held April 17, and WCS was one of seven school districts in the nation that was chosen to present a 10 minute overview of unique and innovative ways that middle schools have integrated mobile technologies in their classrooms this year.

The BYOT teacher leaders and technology coaches used the opportunity to explain ways in which their students have utilized technology to conduct inquiries, collaborate with their peers for in-depth learning, and communicate their thinking and learning. From QR codes to iPad apps, WCS educators shared some of the innovative practices they use to engage students. Those involved say it's incredibly helpful to exchange stories of success and failure with others.

"Our students are living in a technical world and have personal technology at their fingertips almost all the time," said Brentwood Middle School Math Teacher Stephanie Brownfield. "We need to take advantage of that curiosity and interest and use it to engage them in our subject matter and standards. The VILS team gives us a professional learning community that focuses on just that. It allows us to learn from others' successes, and their frustrations. Through that, we grow as teachers and can provide our students with the best learning environment possible."
