Below is a list of recent accomplishments by Williamson County students and staff in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. They are listed in alphabetical order according to school.
Brentwood High Athlete Wins State Title in Shot Put
Congratulations to Brentwood High School student Jack Maher for winning the Class AAA state championship in shot put. His coach is Ronnie Seigenthaler.
Brentwood High Boys Win State Title in 4x800 Meter Relay
Congratulations to the Brentwood High School boys 4x800 relay team for winning the D-1 AAA State Championship. Team members are Aaron Thomas, Ryan Lee, Taylor Caldwell, and Gavin Hasty. Their coach is Ronnie Seigenthaler.
Brentwood High Wins State Title in Girls 4x800 Meter Relay
Congratulations to the Brentwood High School Lady Bruins for winning the 4x800 Meter Relay D-1 AAA State Championship. Team members are Rosie Lobelson, Madi Riddle, Lacey Duvall and Hailey Hendry. Their coaches are Ronnie Seigenthaler and Lara Whitaker.
Franklin High School Receives HSTW Platinum High Achievement Award
Franklin High School is one of 15 schools that have been chosen to receive the 2014 High Schools That Work (HSTW) Platinum High Achievement Award.
This award is given to schools that had 85 percent or more of students meet one or more readiness goal; 85 percent or more of students complete one or more parts of the recommended curriculum; 85 percent or more of students complete at least one recommended concentration; achieve “high implementation” status; and have a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher and/or meets state AYP (on most recent state-reported data). Also, winning schools had at least 50 students complete the 2014 HSTW Assessment (or at least 75 percent of the senior class if it is fewer than 60 seniors).
The Southern Regional Education Board will recognize Franklin High July 16 during the HSTW Summer Staff Development Conference in Nashville.
Franklin High History Club Named Chapter of the Year
The Franklin High School History Club was recently awarded a National Chapter of the Year Award for 2013-14. The National History Club inspires students and teachers to start History Club chapters at high schools, middle schools and within other student and community programs.
Members of local History Club chapters participate in local and national programs, and create their own projects and activities. The NHC also provides chapters with resources and services that will help them increase the activity and impact of their history club.
Franklin High Soccer Repeats as State Champs
Congratulations to the Franklin High School boys soccer team for winning its second straight Class AAA State Championship. The Rebels defeated Collierville by a score of 1-0 May 23 to grab the title. Team members include Austin Baker, Allister Berger, Connor Brady, Matt Brady, Drew Collins, Kyle Cooper, Chance Cuthbert, Sergio Enciso, Brady Fulton, Mitchell Hill, Eli Hiskey, John Fly, Evan Forrest, Parker Lamb, J T Manion, Riley Mease, Elijah Ridley, Brad Ross, Bryan Schrader, Jimmy Wester, Austin Wimberly and Yeon Kim. Their coach is Mike Burgoyne and the assistant coach is Jack Theriot.
Independence Student Wins State Title in Track
Independence High School senior Lizzy Kroeger won the state championship for the Class AAA Girls 1600 Meter Run with a time of 5:00.18. This marked the third time in a row Lizzy has won the state title in the 1600 Meter Run.
Independence High Student Earns CDA Credential
Independence High School student Sarah Hill recently earned a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential. This is the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education and is a key stepping stone on the path of career advancement.
The CDA Credential is based on a core set of competency standards, which guide early care and learning professionals as they work toward becoming qualified teachers of young children. These professionals have the knowledge of how to put the CDA Competency Standard into practice and the understanding of how the Standards help children move with success from one developmental stage to another.
Page High Athlete Wins State Title in Pole Vault
Congratulations to Page High School student Peter Leichner for winning the 2014 Class A-AA state championship in pole vault. Leichner tied his personal best with a winning vault of 14 feet. His coach is Peter Wade.
Page High Student Accepted to Attend 2014 Governor's School
Page High School sophomore Valerie Romanko has been accepted to the 2014 Governor's School for the Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage. The school is underway through June 27 at East Tennessee State University. It provides an intense study of the rich cultural and scientific heritage of Tennessee in a university setting. The core of the program consists of a challenging academic course in Tennessee History which is supplemented by research projects, social activities, and field experience in paleontology, historic preservation, archival studies, and museum studies.
Ravenwood Athlete Wins State Title in Pole Vault
Congratulations to Ravenwood High School student Justin Lankes for winning the 2014 Class AAA state championship in pole vault. This was his second straight title in the event. His coach is Pete Mueller.
Ravenwood High Student Impresses Judges with Computer Skills
Ravenwood High School sophomore Tejas Manohar is earning recognition in the world of computer programming. On May 31, Tejas won second place at Hack for Change Nashville (a part of National Day of Civic Hacking) for developing an itinerary planner using open data from the Metropolitan Government and Yelp API.
Tejas also recently won first place at Code Day hackathon in St. Louis. He teamed up for the event with University of Missouri student Sam Kreter. In less than 24 hours, they developed an open-source Node.js web app that allows guests to organize a group playlist via up and down votes in real-time. They named the app MusicChoose.
In April, Tejas won the Best Design and Functionality award at the 2014 MTSU Blue Spark Awards for his web startup, http://edallies.com, an academic social network that fosters peer learning via student-initiated forums and articles.
Ravenwood High Girls Tennis Team Wins State Title
Katie Fitt, Iris Hao, Kelly Rains, Vicky Go, Callie Roth, Rachel Hudson, Annie Cobb, Emily Wiseman, Angel Asirvatham, Natalyn Jones, Julie Wasack and Michelle Xu. Their coach is Robbie McCammon.
Ravenwood Sophomore Wins State Tennis Championship
Ravenwood High School student Steven Karl won the Class AAA boys singles tennis championship. Karl, who is a sophomore, defeated Cookeville junior Borja Pujol 6-2, 6-3 in the final. Steven's older brother, Sean, won a total of three state titles while at Ravenwood from 2010-12. Robbie McCammon is the head coach at Ravenwood.
WCS Students Selected to Participate in National History Bee
At least five Williamson County students have been selected to participate in the National History Bee in Atlanta June 6-8. Allendale Elementary students Kochi Ikeda and Matthew Dooley and Longview Elementary students Joshua Cannon, Sarah Brunson and Colin Smith will compete in the annual event.
The National History Bee is an academic competition for elementary and middle school students that tests knowledge of a wide range of historical topics. The top finishers from the 37 Regional Finals are eligible to advance to the National Finals and compete for the title of National History Bee Champion.
