Below is a list of recent accomplishments by Williamson County students and staff in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. They are listed in alphabetical order according to school.
Hot Shots Jump Rope Team Qualifies for AAU Jr. Olympics
The Hot Shots Jump Rope Team recently competed at the AAU jump rope regionals in Bowling Green. The team, which is comprised of students from Hunters Bend Elementary, Grassland Middle and Franklin High, swept the medals and awards and qualified to compete at the AAU Jr. Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa, this summer.
Franklin High Percussion Ensemble Chosen to Perform at TMEA Conference
Congratulations to the Franklin High School Percussion Ensemble and their director Michael Holland for being selected to perform at the 2014 Tennessee Music Education Association Conference.
TMEA sponsors an annual conference with professional development sessions and performances by select elementary school, middle school, high school and university vocal and instrumental ensembles from across the state.
Ensembles submit recordings to a committee comprised of leading Tennessee educators and then undergo a thorough selection process in order to be invited to perform. This year's conference will be held in Memphis.
Franklin High Band Director Selected as Bandworld Legion of Honor
Franklin High School Band Director David Aydelott has been selected as a John Philip Sousa Foundation Laureate of the Bandworld Legion of Honor. The Bandworld Legion of Honor was established in 1989 to honor, over the course of a year, eight of the finest band directors in the nation.
Recipients have taught for at least 15 years, have maintained a very high quality concert band program, and have contributed significantly to the profession through dedication to bands and band music. Each is honored at the annual Sousa Foundation awards ceremony during the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.
FHS Student Receives $2,000 Scholarship from Spanish National Honor Society
Congratulations to Franklin High student Isi Beach for being awarded the Joseph Adams Scholarship from the Spanish National Honor Society (Socieded Honoraria Hispánica).
Isi, an IB Spanish V senior, is one of only 12 students throughout the country to win a $2,000 scholarship from the organization. The extensive application process included composing a persuasive essay in Spanish as well as submitting a video-recorded interview in Spanish with her teacher, Shelley Walker. As a recipient, she will write a follow-up essay about her future plans to be published in the honor society’s journal.
Franklin High Students Win Writing Competition
Congratulations to Franklin High School students Watson Anderson and Sydney Sturm for winning the MTEC writing competition. They will each receive $100 for their writing. In addition, Watson has won an all-expense paid week long trip to Washington D.C. to participate in the Washington Youth Tour with students from 48 states. Their teachers are Gini Moonshower and Kelly McElhiney.
Page High Winter Drum Line Concludes Incredible Season
The Page High School Winter Drum Line Ensemble ended itsr five month season with a boom! They won first place in the Percussion Scholastic A Class at the SCGC championship in a field of 18 high schools from southeast region with their show entitled Pompeii, depicting the abrupt end of the ancient civilization.
They were also finalists in WGI Mid South Championship the previous weekend at Western Kentucky University and finished first place in earlier season percussion competitions at Independence and Summitt High Schools and Greenwood High School in Kentucky. The 2013-14 winter drum line season was directed by a talented staff including Ben Lupton, Montana Malbrough and Dean Johnson.
Members are Issac Rizzo, Claire Edwards, Zack McGee, Haylee Smith, Jamie Pilgrim, Michael Lee, Emilee Gray, Dylan Rosson, Taylor Brown, Benji Wilson, Mitchell Carson, Sidney Whittaker, Pheonix Harris, Garrett Harvey, Becky Singletary, Caleb Oltmanns, Natalie Smith, Ally Burke, Emily Izzi, Praket Borkar, Jessica Knoble, Zoie Jones, Evan Mason, Jack Johnson, Dirk Simmons, Nathan Mohnke, Cey Johnson, Ben Young, Danny Williamson, Hayley Smith, Nick Anowar, Yasmine Ihmeidan and Zach Gaspie.
Ravenwood Wrestler Named All American
Congratulations to Rex Shotts who became Ravenwood's first wrestling All American the weekend of March 29 at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Rex placed 8th in the nation in his weight class, qualifying him for this honor. Josh Peck coaches the RHS wrestling team.
Ravenwood Student Earns Two Special Honors
Congratulations to Ravenwood High School student Gene Li for receiving a letter of commendation on the CAMWS Latin Translation Contest. CAMWS stands for the Classical Association of the Middle, West and South. The awards are 3-tiered and include 10 cash awards, 20 book prizes and 30 letters of commendation. Gene is a third year Latin student.
Li also qualified for the United States of America Math Olympiad (USAMO). The USAMO is a high school mathematics competition held annually in the United States. The competition consists of a six-question, nine-hour mathematical proof examination spread out over two days. The top 266 math students in the nation were invited to take the USAMO this year. Gene is the first person from Ravenwood High to qualify for the USAMO.
Ravenwood Senior Receives Scholarship Worth $300,000
Congratulations to Ravenwood High School Senior Niman Mann for being named a recipient of the Morehead-Cain scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill worth over $300,000. The Morehead-Cain award is the first merit scholarship program established in the United States. Founded at the first public university in the United States, it was the first to envision and implement a strategic summer enrichment program and, most recently, the first to designate a fund for discovery for each scholar.
Ravenwood HOSA Students Recognized at State Competition
The Ravenwood High School HOSA Club had a successful conference at the State Competition in Nashville. Thirty-five students competed in health care events with students from all over Tennessee. The following students placed in the top five in their competitions:

- Lauren Birge - Transcultural Health Care 5th place
- Madison Ricketts - HealthCare Issues Finalist (National Qualifier)
- Claire Faro and Madison Ricketts - National Service Project State Recognition
Woodland Middle Students Compete at Math Olympiad
Woodland Middle School mathletes recently competed in the 4th annual Math Olympiad. Stacy Xiang, Vamsi Konjeti, Stewart Moore, Heeju Kim and Natalie Joseph won first place; Omar Awan, Matthew Conley, Gamie Gim and Sithara Samudrala won second place; and Kaitlyn Mi, Zoe Rozine and Nilai Sheth finished third.
