Below is a list of recent accomplishments by Williamson County students and staff in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. They are listed in alphabetical order according to school.
Centennial High Choirs Earn Superior Marks
Congratulations to the Centennial High School Women's Choir and Chamber Choir for receiving Superiors at the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association's Adjudication Festival on February 24. This qualifies them to go to state for adjudication in April.
Chapman's Retreat Student Wins Spelling Bee
Chapman's Retreat Elementary School hosted a school-wide spelling bee. Liam Keck won first place and will progress to the next round and compete against other schools in the district. Liam is pictured below with his teacher Tatum Kemp.
Fairview Middle Student Earns Honorable Mention for Artwork
Congratulations to Fairview Middle School eighth grader Kendrick Catron who received an honorable mention from the Scholastic Art Awards for her painting titled On My Mind (pictured below). Kendrick's teacher is Michelle Vinci.
Franklin High Student Named Culinary Arts Student of the Year
Franklin High School student Sarah Buchanan was named Secondary Student Culinarian of the Year by the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the American Culinary Federation. The award is given to students who demonstrate leadership and exemplary effort in the classroom and kitchen. As part of the award, she received a check for $500. Her teacher is Charles Gillespie.
Grassland Middle Girls Basketball Team Wins WMAA Championship
Congratulations to the Lady Generals from Grassland Middle School for winning the WMAA championship by defeating Freedom Middle by a score of 38-35. Holly Harris led all scorers with 14. Sarah Harden had 11 and was named the MVP for the tournament.
This group lost one game in three years and went 21-0 as eighth graders to become the most successful basketball team in Grassland Middle School history. Team members include Millie O'Brien, Hope Stoppelbein, Holly Harris, Sarah Harden, Jillian King, Caroline DeFranco, Grace Gardner, Cassie Hayes, Sarah Wright and Annabelle Walter. The coaches are Allison Hill and Barbara Spierto.
Ravenwood High Wrestling Team Finishes Fourth at State Tournament
The Ravenwood High School wrestling team finished fourth at the recent state tournament. Taylor Warren (pictured below) won first place in his weight class. Robin Klingensmith, Rex Shotts and Tailor Stole finished second in their respective weight classes; Chris Rowland came in third; and Cade Smith finished fourth. Their coach is Josh Peck.
Scales Students Earn Medals at Mini Mu Math Competition
Nine students from Scales Elementary School received winning medals at the annual Mini Mu Contest at Brentwood High. The contest is run each year by member of the high school’s Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society).

Summit High Science Bowl Teams Compete at State Tournament
The Summit High School Science Bowl Team competed in the TN Science Quiz Bowl on February 22 at Pellissippi State University along with 55 other teams from across the state. Team 1, consisting of Cass Roberts, Josh Allen, Lauren Flader, Anthony Kupecz and Camden McNeely, made it through the morning round-robin division with a 5-1 record. They advanced to the afternoon single-elimination tournament and tied for eighth place.
Team 2, consisting of Michael Clothier, Josh Sadler, Jaron Hengstenberg, Billy Baumgart and Christian Glandorf lost two matches by a single question and were unable to advance to the next round. Summit’s Science Bowl coaches are Ryan Lowry and Jim Cherry.
Summit High Wins History Bowl
Congratulations to Summit High School for winning the fourth annual History Bowl. The event is hosted by Brentwood’s Historic Commission in an effort to create a love of history in young people.
Students who compete in the History Bowl are mostly selected from Advanced Placement (AP) history classes. Teams practice for the contest by using AP test cards, questions from previous history bowls and history text books. The questions focus on American history.
The Summit High team comprised of Camden McNeely, Rylan Meares and Matt Strong beat out teams from five other schools to claim the Sarah Bayrd American History Trophy. In addition, the school's history program will receive $300. They are coached by Jeffrey Graves.
Summit Students Excel in Etymology
Two Summit High School Latin students were awarded medals on the National Classical Etymology Exam, which is sponsored by the National Junior Classical League.
The exam measures knowledge of both Greek and Latin roots and has been statistically tied to higher grades on the ACT and SAT. Latin III student Anthony Kupecz was awarded a gold medal, and Latin I student Michael Cox was awarded a bronze medal. Their teacher is Jason Nabors.
Sunset Elementary Student Wins First Place in Speech Contest
Sunset Elementary School fourth grader Jake Henderson won first place at the All Area 4-H Speech Contest February 24. The competition consisted of 20 speakers, two each from 10 counties in Middle Tennessee. This was Henderson's fourth round of competition.
Sunset Elementary is among several Williamson County schools that partner with Williamson County 4-H on the speech contest. Students must write and present a three minute speech on one of the character traits associated with 4-H. Henderson's speech focused on the courage shown by baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Second place was awarded to Mackenzie White from Westwood Elementary.
Winstead Student Wins School Spelling Bee
Congratulations to Winstead Elementary School student Lily Wilson for winning the school-wide Spelling Bee. Paige Rieschick finished second. They are pictured below with Principal Kathy Wells.
Winstead Students Place in District-Wide Mini-Mu Math Competition
On February 8, 500 fourth and fifth grade students from across Williamson County gathered at Brentwood High School for the annual Mini-Mu Math Competition, and awards were given to the top 25 competitors in each of the two sessions.
From Winstead Elementary School, Tucker Tremayne placed first in Session 1 and second in Session 2; Jacob Williams placed third in Session 1 and 19th in Session 2; Ford Sweat placed 21st in Session 1 and Tayler Montiel placed 22nd in Session 2.
