Below is a list of recent accomplishments by Williamson County students and staff in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. They are listed in alphabetical order according to school.

Grassland Middle Students Selected to Williamson County Honor Band & Festival Orchestra

Thirteen Grassland Middle School band students recently participated in the Williamson County Honor Band and Festival Orchestra. The students were selected by their scores at the MTSBOA Mid-State Try-Outs or by director nomination. They are Sarah Li, Julianna Forbess, Savannah Faulman, Amelia Mitchell, Shelby Kleiner, Grace Owen, Gibbs Bedenbaugh, Jonah Albert, Camden Whitehead, Luke Olson, Ben Foushee, Grant Marsh and Peyton Cork. Their band director is Jan Dossey.

Hillsboro Students Participate in Williamson County Honor Band & Festival Orchestra

Ten Hillsboro band students recently participated in the Williamson County Honor Band and Festival Orchestra. The students were selected by their scores at the MTSBOA Mid-State Try-Outs or by director nomination. They are Riley Coleman (clarinet), Jordan Hafner (alto sax), Leland VanHorn (bari sax), Webb Littleton (trumpet), Emily Grabbe (trumpet), Michelangelo Hooghkirk (trombone), Nicholas Hoffmann (trombone), Hunter Gray (euphonium), Andrew White (tuba) and Hunter Jones (percussion). Their band director is Cameron Gish.

Independence DECA Students Compete at Regional Tournament

Seventeen Independence High School DECA students will advance to the state tournament following their performance at the regional competition. The students who finish among the top seven in team events advance to state, as well as those who finish among the top 10 in individual events. Congratulations to the following students who will advance to the state tournament:

Fairview High Students Wins First Place at Regional HOSA Conference

Fairview High School Junior Savannah Hester won first place in the Medical Terminology competition at HOSA Regionals for the Lower Middle TN region. She will be competing at the HOSA State Conference March 31-April 2. Savannah's teacher is Stephanie Keen.

Fairview High Student Wins Second Place at JAG National Conference

Fairview High School student Ashley Coots finished second in the Employment Interviewing competition at this year's Jobs for America's Graduates National Conference in Washington DC. This was an event where the students demonstrated their ability to secure employment through proficiency in a job application process and through interview situations. Ashley's teacher is Vickie Parsons.

Seventh Grader Wins Fairview Middle Spelling Bee Competition

Congratulations to Fairview Middle School seventh grader Maggie McGowan (pictured below) for winning first place in the school-wide spelling bee. Sally Johnson was first runner-up and will be the alternate in the district finals which will be held March 14 in Nashville. Sixth grader Gentry Sutton came in third place.

Page High Junior Selected to Attend TN Governor's School

Page High School Junior Carley Fell has been selected from a pool of over 800 applicants to participate in the 2014 TN Governor's School for the Arts in Music, for French Horn. In recognition of her dedication, talent and high achievements, she has been awarded a Maximum Scholarship, covering program costs including room, board and tuition.

Governor's School for the Arts, is a prestigious summer program held at MTSU in Murfreesboro from June 1-26. Carley will join other talented students from throughout the state who will be studying music, visual art, dance, filmmaking or theatre during this four-week period.

Page High Students Participate in DECA Competition

Twenty-eight Page High School DECA students recently participated in district competition. Nineteen were award winners and 17 will move on to the state level. The following students placed second overall:

Ravenwood Cheerleaders Finish Second at National Tournament

Congratulations to the Ravenwood Competition Cheerleaders for finishing as the national runner-up at the UCA High School National Championships in Orlando. The girls finished second overall in the medium varsity category. This is the first time a Ravenwood squad has ever placed at the nationals. Team members include Brooke Phillips, Olivia Blair, Becca Zaves, Aerial Griffin, Lauren Martin, Caley Caldwell, Clare Webb, Sydney Fordice, Logan Jordan, Kylie Betchley, Riley Stofka, Sarah Klippenstein, Bailey Wertz, Greta Peterson, Rylie Armstrong, Kaylen Lanius, Claire Sorenson and Jasmine Archie. Their coach is Katy Whatley.

Summit High Students Qualify for State DECA Competition

Summit High School-Based Enterprise Program Earns Gold Level Certification

The School-Based Enterprise at Summit High School is among 221 school-based enterprises in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification (or Gold Level Re-certification) this year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Atlanta. The students who worked on the certification were Jake Leach and Miyah Woodgett with the assistance of their advisor Amanda Muniz. The school-based enterprise at Summit High School has operated for less than two years.

A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods and services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate national curriculum standards in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Marketing educators and DECA advisors have utilized this effective educational tool for over four decades to provide their students with realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction, enhance 21st century skill development, and prepare students for college and careers.

Summit High Student Named Finalist for Prudential Spirit of Community Award

Summit High School Senior Madison Blackstock was recognized as a distinguished finalist in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a program that honors young people for acts of volunteerism.

Madison founded a service project through her school's Interact Club that provided all 150 club members with $5, along with instructions to multiply the amount and donate it to a cause they deemed worthy within the community. Madison is now planning to expand the project beyond Tennessee.

For being named a distinguished finalist, Madison will receive an engraved bronze medallion.
