Below is a list of recent accomplishments by Williamson County students and staff in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. They are listed in alphabetical order according to school.

Centennial Student Signs to Play Collegiate Volleyball

Centennial High School recently held a signing ceremony for Reagan Petty. Reagan will play volleyball at the University of Alabama. The senior played volleyball for Centennial High all four years and served as team captain her senior year.

“Reagan is a dynamic player," said Coach Brittany Rhinehart. "She makes plays that most other players can’t make. She is a player that no matter what is asked of her, will do it to the best of her ability. She truly leads by example in her play, in her academics and just in her overall court presence.”

 

Fairview Middle Student Named Junior Honoree for 2013 Jingle Bell Rock 5K

Fairview Middle School seventh grader Caroline Scheurmann has been selected to be the Junior Honoree for the 2013 Franklin Jingle Bell Run/Walk for the Arthritis foundation.

Caroline was diagnosed with polyarticular juvenile arthritis, which makes it difficult for her to participate in physical activities. As a junior honoree, Caroline's story will be shared with the public in an attempt to raise money to fight arthritis.

 

Fairview Middle Student Wins Power of the Pen Writing Contest

Middle School students from all across the county recently gathered for the annual Power of the Pen writers' conference in Franklin.

The event gives students a chance to share their own writings with professional authors who then critique their pieces and give feedback on how to make their writing better.

Out of the 54 writers who attended, Fairview Middle School seventh grader Katie Gilchrist was chosen as the Best Overall Writer. Katie’s piece was also selected as the best example of author's "voice."

 

Franklin Band Finishes 15th in Nation at Bands of America Grand Nationals Competition

The Franklin High Band ended their marching band season in Indianapolis November 17 at the Bands of America Grand Nationals Championship. The Rebels secured a spot in the semifinals competition, scoring 15th in the nation and second in class AAA for the second year in a row. The competition was fierce with 91 bands representing 20 states.

While in Indianapolis, the band took a break from the competition to visit Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent and present hand-made superhero capes for the children. Later that day, they performed a concert for residents of the Little Sisters of the Poor St. Augustine Home.

“We come to Indianapolis every year for Grand Nationals and it has become kind of our second home," said Band Director David Aydelott. "Our kids and parents love being here, and so we decided to fill some of our downtime Saturday with community service."

The Franklin Band had an incredible 2013 season, winning the MTSU Contest of Champions, as well as the Bands of America Regional Championship in Powder Springs, Georgia, in October. The band is directed by Aydelott, Michael Holland and Monica Zsolt.

 


Grassland Middle Girls Soccer Team Wins WMAA Title

The Grassland Middle School girls soccer team defeated Brentwood Middle November 21 to win the 2013 WMAA Championship. Harper White scored the goal to tie the game at 1-1. After two overtime periods, the game went to penalty kicks.

Natalie Young and Maddie Deere hit their shots. Caroline Defranco made it final with the last goal of the game. Team members include Maddy Deere, Caroline DeFranco, Caroline Coady, Julia Cook, Maggie Cuthbert, Madi Hammett, Holly Harris, Belle Hollander, Taylor Mattioli, Morgan Phelps, Massey Quiggle and Kaylie Ward. They are coached by Clarke Oldham and Michelle Cross.

 

 

Ravenwood Students Win Math Competition

Congratulations to the 10 Ravenwood students who competed at the Pro2Serve Math Contest in Knoxville. The four RHS competitors who advanced to the second round of testing, Fermat II are Zach Glick, Gene Li, Jordan Widjaja and Rohan Tummala.

The Ravenwood math bowl team came away as champions, winning from the loser's bracket in a 64 team pool. They had to beat the "winner's bracket" team, Collierville, twice to win it all. The team consisted of Gene Li, Zach Glick, Stanley Xiang and Aditya Sathe.

 


Ravenwood Students Win Criminal Justice Competition

Ravenwood High School recently won first place overall at the Middle Tennessee Criminal Justice competition. Team members include Mady Hazen, Jason Kidwell, Adam Peters, Eric Brown, Kayla Rice, Hailey Oliver and Nick Dixon. Those involved say the the Williamson County Sheriff's Office's Police Explorer program played a big role in their success.

Mady Hazen, Kayla Rice, Nick Dixon, Eric Brown and Adam Peters won first place in the Criminal Justice Trivia category; Mady Hazen and Kayla Rice won first place in the Fingerprint Collection category; Mady Hazen and Jason Kidwell won first place in the Sobriety Checkpoint category; and Mady Hazen and Jason Kidwell won first place in the High Risk Felony Stop category. Mary Campbell is their teacher.

 


RHS Cheerleaders Win First Place at Competition

The Ravenwood High School Competitive Cheer Squad placed first again in the medium varsity division at the Bluegrass Regional Cheerleading Competition in Lexington, Kentucky. They have already secured a bid and plan on attending the national competition in Orlando in February.

Members of the squad are Aerial Griffin, Brooke Phillips, Caley Caldwell, Jasmine Archie, Rylie Armstrong, Kaylen Lanius, Olivia Blair, Lauren Martin, Riley Stofka, Claire Webb, Taleigh Wood, Clare Sorenson, Becca Zaves, Bailey Wertz, Kylie Betchley, Sarah Klippenstein, Logan Jordan and Sydney Fordice. The squad is sponsored by Stephanie Feyes.

 

Summit High Students to Play Collegiate Sports

Summit High School's first graduating class will have at least two athletes who will go on to play collegiate sports. On November 14, a signing ceremony was held for Dallas Richards who will play softball at Tennessee State University and for Dale Burdick who will play baseball for Mississippi State.

 

Woodland Middle Musicians Give Superior Performance at Festival

The Woodland Middle School Band recently participated in the MTSBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Twenty-eight students received a rating of excellent, and 72 students received the highest rating of superior. The students were commended not only for their performance, but for their behavior and professionalism as well.
