Below is a list of recent accomplishments by Williamson County students and staff in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. They are listed in alphabetical order according to school.
Brentwood Middle Golf Team Wins County Championship
The Brentwood Middle School boys golf team crushed the competition at this year's Williamson County Middle School Golf Championship. Led by Trenton Johnson and Barrett Jones, the Vikings finished the tournament with a commanding 18-stroke lead and a team low score of 280. Brentwood Middle finished the season with a 11-1 record.
Brentwood High Scholar Named Semifinalist for Siemens Competition
Brentwood High School student Joyce Kang was recently named a semifinalist for the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. This annual contest is administered by The College Board and recognizes high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through science research.
Joyce was named a semifinalist for the research she completed this summer at Vanderbilt University. Her project focused on the design, fabrication and testing of a supercapacitor with an innovative, flexible design.
With its high academic standards, rigorous judging process and emphasis on authentic scientific research, the Siemens Competition is regarded as one of the leading science and mathematics research-based competitions for high school students.
Brentwood Girls Cross Country Team Takes Second Place at State
Congratulations to the Brentwood High School girls cross country team for finishing second at this year's TSSAA - AAA cross country championship. Team members include Brianna Koshy, Ansley Hardin, Elizabeth Scott, Hailey Hendry, Lacey Duvall, Emily Hughes and Hannah Caldwell (who finished fourth in the individual competition). They are coached by Lara Whitaker.
Brentwood High Band Earns Numerous Awards at Competition
The Brentwood High School Marching Band recently competed against 28 bands from seven states at the USBand Southern States Championship in Chattanooga.
Brentwood earned a score of 97.65, which happened to be the highest score in the country given by USBand this season. They also won Best in Class V, Best in Show and received the highest scores in music, visual and overall effect.
In addition, BHS received second place in color guard, third place in percussion and was awarded the WSMC Esprit de Corps Award. The BHS Band is directed by Randy Box.
Centennial Student Wins $40,000 Scholarship to O'More College of Design
Centennial High School Junior Alyssa Ward was the big winner at the 2013 Verve Show. The Verve Show is an annual poster contest at O'More College of Design.
Alyssa captured the Best of Show award for her poster and was given a $40,000 scholarship to attend O'More. Aylssa is currently a student in Debbie Chessor's digital art and design class at Centennial.
Centennial/Ravenwood Strings Orchestra Perform at LEAD Conference
The combined Centennial/Ravenwood Strings Orchestra was recently invited to perform at The Tennessee Educational LEADership Conference put on by the Tennessee Department of Education. The event was attended by Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman, Governor Bill Haslam and educational leaders from across the state. The orchestra, directed by Allison Cowan, performed two selections for the General Conference on October 29.
CHS Student Wins Pumpkin Design Contest
For the third year in a row, a Centennial High School student has taken first place in the county wide pumpkin design contest. Junior Alex Gray won first place for his design entitled Only in your Nightmares.
As part of the competition, drafting students are given one week to design, name and present their pumpkin against the other county schools. Then, the students vote on the design they think deserves first place.
Alex will now place his name on the wooden pumpkin and the pumpkin will stay on display at Centennial High for the remainder of the year.
Fairview Middle Student's Artwork to go on Display
Congratulations to Fairview Middle School eighth grader Audrey Simms whose artwork was selected for the Middle Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition. Audrey's art will be on display at the Renaissance Center this December and January along with other students’ works from all over Middle Tennessee.
Franklin High Student Wins Bronze Award at 2013 Verve Show
Franklin High School student Eliza Hawkins was recently recognized for her talent and ability at the annual O'More College of Design Verve Show awards.
Hawkins received the bronze award at this year's event, which included more than 125 entries. Hawkins is a student in Melissa Estes' design class at Franklin High.
Franklin High Band Wins MTSU Contest of Champions
The Franklin High School Marching Band competed with 16 bands from across Tennessee and Kentucky to win the Grand Champion title and the Tennessee Governor’s Cup in the 52nd annual Contest of Champions at MTSU on October 26.
Franklin won the top prize last year. They were also the first Williamson County band to win the Grand Championship at this contest, which is the longest running marching band contest in the country.
The band competes next in the Bands of America Grand National Competition with nearly 100 of the finest marching bands from across the country to be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on November 13-16, 2013.
Hillsboro Band Director Chosen as Guest Conductor
Hillsboro School band Director Cameron Gish has been selected as a Guest Conductor for the 66th annual Quad-State Middle School Band Festival, hosted by Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky.
The festival includes nearly 400 students from four states. Participating students will perform alongside other students from the four-state region in one of four bands, each led by a guest conductor. The festival takes place November 25 on Murray State’s campus.
Throughout the day, students will rehearse with their bands, attend master classes led by MSU instrumental faculty members and hear a performance by the MSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The festival concludes with an evening concert in historic Lovett Auditorium, featuring each of the four bands.
Gish is now in his third year as band director at Hillsboro School. Currently, there are nearly 150 students enrolled in the band program at Hillsboro School, over 40 percent of the entire middle school enrollment. The Hillsboro Band program also includes a jazz orchestra and percussion ensemble, which rehearse after school.
Ravenwood Girls Soccer Team Finish Second in State Tourney
Congratulations to Ravenwood Lady Raptors for finishing runner up in the state tournament and completing the best season in Raptor history. Ravenwood lost 3-1 to Houston in the state championship final. Caroline Fallon scored the only goal for the Raptors with an assist by Karlie Paschall. The team is coached Jose Londono.
Summit High Principal Receives Prestigious Award
Summit High School Principal Dr. Charles Farmer has been selected as Principal of the Year as part of the TSSAA A. F. Bridges Awards Program. The award is given for displaying the high ideals of integrity and ethics and for the examples of citizenship and sportsmanship.
Farmer was recognized November 7 during a ceremony at the TSSAA regional meeting in Nashville. The A.F. Bridges Award is named in honor of the first executive secretary of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.
Summit High Band Competes at Vanderbilt Marching Invitational
The Summit High School Marching Spartans traveled to Vanderbilt University October 26 to compete at the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational. The band, drumline, color guard and field commanders all scored a superior rating and the band finished first place in their classification as well as being named the Small Division Grand Champion.
