Across the Board - October 21, 2013

Reward Schools across the district were recognized during the October 21, 2013, meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education. Edmondson, Grassland, Kenrose, Lipscomb, Nolensville, Oak View, Pearre Creek, Scales, Walnut Grove and Winstead elementary schools were honored for performance; Hillsboro, Page, Sunset and Woodland middle schools were honored for performance; and Brentwood, Franklin, Independence and Summit high schools were honored for performance. Allendale, Clovercroft, Crockett, Sunset and Trinity elementary schools were recognized for performance and progress, and Brentwood and Grassland middle schools and Page High were recognized for performance and progress.
Student Spotlight Awards were given to a number of Williamson County students. CLICK HERE to read about their accomplishments.
Three staff members were honored with spotlights including Walnut Grove Elementary Art Teacher Janet Taylor who was named the 2013-14 Tennessee Art Education Association Middle Region Art Educator of the Year; Fairview Middle Art Teacher Michelle Vinci who was named Tennessee Art Education Association Board of Directors Middle School Representative; and Page High Principal Dr. Andrea Anthony who was named National Association of Secondary School Principals Principal of the Year for Tennessee.
In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney gave red ribbons to Board members and encouraged them to support the district during Red Ribbon Week.
In the Board Chairman’s Report, Pat Anderson thanked WCS Ambassadors Melinda Miller and John Mayer for their contributions to the district. Miller created a program called Bank of Free Nights where area hotels donated stays for use in PTO fundraising efforts. Mayer donated $30,000 to Brentwood High to create a leasing program, that can be modeled by any district school, with Carpenter Bus Services to transport school athletes more efficiently. She also thanked Nissan Corporation for its $10,000 donation to Ladders to HOPE.
In New Business, the Board:
- Approved one policy on first reading, Graduation with Honors or Distinction, editorial change only, and pulled Board Meeting Agendas.
- Approved one amendment to the 2013-2014 General Purpose School Fund Budget for $14,365 for a full time teacher assistant at Grassland Elementary to be paid by PTO funds.
- Approved two intra-category transfers including one for $15,000 for Destination Imagination to be offered as an extracurricular activity and one for $150,000 to cover storm damage at Centennial and Fairview baseball fields.
- Approved a Code of Ethics for Board members.
- Approved a Five Year Capital Outlay Plan.
In other business, the Board:
- Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
- Approved revisions to the Transfer policy on second reading.
- Approved an increase of $10 a day for special education teacher assistant substitutes.
- Approved the Social Studies Textbook Adoption Committee membership.
- Approved the 2014-15 budget timeline.
