2013-14 School Year Accomplishments

There's no denying it; the 2013-14 school year was one of the best in the history of Williamson County Schools. Students, teachers, parents and community members have plenty of reasons to feel proud. Below is a brief list of this year's notable accomplishments in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts.

Academics

  • WCS Tops Tennessee in TCAP Achievement (highest level of achievement ever measured in WCS).
  • Williamson County Schools records the highest ACT composite average in the history of the district. The WCS Class of 2013 posted an ACT composite score of 23.4 in 2013, which outscored the state and national averages of 19.5 and 20.9, respectively.
  • Twenty-six Williamson County schools were named 2013 Reward Schools by the Tennessee Department of Education. Reward Schools are the top five percent of schools in the state for annual growth and the top five percent for academic achievement.
  • Thirty-eight WCS students were named National Merit Semifinalists, setting a new district record.
  • WCS kicked off a new Elementary World Language program. Students in grades K-5 who enrolled were given a chance to attend a Spanish or Chinese language class one hour a week, before or after school.
  • WCS earned all A's in both achievement and growth for the first time in the history of the district on the Tennessee Department of Education's 2013 State Report Card.
  • Thirty-four WCS seniors were named National Merit Finalists, tying the district record set last year.
  • Brentwood High School senior Joyce Kang is one of 144 seniors nationwide to be named a 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholar. United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made the announcement May 5.
  • According to the website schooldigger.com, which ranks schools and school districts, WCS is first in the nation among public school districts with more than 20,000 students and fourth in the nation when compared with school districts with more than 10,000 students.
  • The graduating class of 2015 recorded more perfect ACT scores than any other class in WCS history. As of May 21, at least seven Williamson County juniors had earned a perfect 36 composite score on the ACT test.

Athletics

  • The Brentwood High School boys cross country team won the TSSAA - AAA Cross Country Championship.
  • The Brentwood High School volleyball team won its ninth state volleyball championship.
  • Independence High School Senior Lizzy Kroeger was named one of 12 national finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman award.
  • Ravenwood High School Senior Wesley Horky was named an Under Armour All-American.
  • The Ravenwood High School Cheerleading Squad won the 2013 TSSAA State Medium Varsity Cheerleading Championship.
  • Ravenwood High School student Rex Schotts was named an All-American by the National High School Coaches Association.
  • Four WCS high school wrestlers won TSSAA state championships in their division.
  • Franklin High School student Brad Ross was named the Tennessee Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year.

Arts

  • Three WCS students received the American Vision Award (Best of Show) at the 2014 Scholastic Art Awards.
  • Nine Williamson County students received a Gold Key Award at the 2014 Scholastic Art Awards.
  • Three WCS students were selected to perform in the 2013-14 Honor Band of America.
  • Walnut Grove Art Teacher Janet Taylor was named the 2013-14 Tennessee Art Education Association's Middle Region Art Educator of the Year.
  • The Franklin High School Marching Band won the Grand Champion title and the Tennessee Governor’s Cup in the 52nd annual Contest of Champions at MTSU.
  • The Franklin High School Marching Band took home first place at the 2013 Music for All Bands of America Regional Championship in Powder Springs, Georgia.
  • WCS held its first annual Fine Arts Festival March 28-29, giving students from across the county a chance to display their incredible artistic talent.
