WCS Coaches Get CPR Certified
Published May 31, 2013
It's a skill they hope they never have to use, but one that could save a life. On May 28, middle school coaches from across the district took part in a CPR class where they learned about chest compressions, mouth-to-mouth breathing and how to use an automatic external defibrillator (AED).
The Williamson Middle Athletic Association by-laws require that all middle school head coaches are CPR certified before they hold any event or practice session. The hope is that coaches will be better prepared to respond to an emergency medical situation on or off the field.
"These classes are taught by WCS nurses at various times throughout the school year and summer," said WCS Nursing Coordinator Cynthia Boykin. "Classes are offered not only for those positions that require CPR, but also for other positions such as bus drivers and early childcare workers. We always hope these skills will never be necessary, but if they are, we want to be ready."
