TN Dominated TN Science Bowl Competition

Published March 7, 2013

Williamson County students bowled over the competition at this year's Tennessee High School Science Bowl. Four of the top eight teams were from Williamson County including the grand champion, Summit High School.

Now that they've won the first team state championship in school history, the Summit High Science Bowl team will be awarded an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete at the national competition April 25-29.

“For our kids to achieve this level of excellence so early in Summit’s existence is really a testament to their hard work and what we are trying to accomplish as a school,” said Summit High Principal Dr. Charles Farmer. “I am proud of them. They have set a standard that I hope we can continue to build on, not only in science, but in all facets of our school.”

The Summit High team is comprised of Anthony Kupecz, Lauren Flader, Cassidy Roberts, Josh Allen and Camden McNeely. They are coached by science teacher Ryan Lowry, who calls the state competition one of the most exciting experiences of his life.

"These five students are some of the most gifted students I have ever met," said Lowry. "They love learning and are taught by teachers who are willing to do extra work to make sure these bright kids learn something new before they walk out of their classrooms."

More than 50 teams competed at the Tennessee High School Science Bowl. Students, in teams of four or five, compete in a fast-paced Jeopardy-style format where they solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math.

Two teams from Ravenwood High School finished in third and fourth place, while a team from Independence High School finished eighth.
