Summit Engineering Students Show Off Creations

Published May 17, 2013

Students at Summit High School recently faced a similar challenge Waste Management is going through with Spring Hill’s new curbside recycling program.

After learning about the recycling process and how Waste Management sorts the recyclables, Summit High engineering students had to design a machine and computer program capable of sorting three different types of marbles into separate bins.

Working in groups, the students chose the most effective designs and created their machines to demonstrate to fellow students and teachers.

“In our group we created a bunch of designs and chose different aspects that would work best,” said Summit High Junior Taylor Cook.

Kris Schneider’s engineering classes have faced many challenges this year, but students claim this was by far the most challenging.

"This was a really challenging task that incorporated so many different aspects of engineering and computer programming,” said Schneider. “My kids really rose to the challenge and did a great job in their final sorting.”

According to Schneider, the project has given students a greater understanding and appreciation for all the work that goes behind the recycling process.
