Student Spotlight Awards are given to Williamson County students who placed first in state or national competitions. Each Student Spotlight award winner is recognized before the School Board at its monthly meeting. Listed below are the district's Student Spotlight Award winners for the month of May.

Numbers Add Up for Brentwood Middle Student at Math Contest

Brentwood Middle School eighth grader Harry Westbrook placed first in Algebra II at the Tennessee Math Teachers Association Competition.

The Tennessee Mathematics Teachers' Association's mission is to encourage the study of and improve the teaching of mathematics in all the schools and colleges of Tennessee. Each year, they provide exams in six content areas including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Statistics, Precalculus and Calculus.

Harry's teacher at Brentwood Middle is Vivia Smith.

 

Brentwood Middle Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

Brentwood Middle School's Destination Imagination team won first place at this year's Destination Imagination state tournament in the categories of Change in RealiTee and Wind Visible.

The team members are Sara Dillender, Sydney Smith, Matthew Donahue, Brady Cauthen, Harry Westbrook, Sophie Khomtchenko and Julia Lifferth. The team coach is Melanie Dillender and DI School Sponsor is Meredith Tuinstra.

Destination Imagination is an educational program where student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments. The Tennessee tournament was held April 13 in Nashville.

 

BHS Student Wins Tennessee Math Teachers Association Competition

Brentwood High School's Joyce Kang placed first in Calculus at the Tennessee Math Teachers Association Competition.

The Tennessee Mathematics Teachers' Association's mission is to encourage the study of and improve the teaching of mathematics in all the schools and colleges of Tennessee. Each year, they provide exams in six content areas including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Statistics, Pre-calculus and Calculus.

Her teacher at Brentwood High is Jerry Stelmaszak.

 


Brentwood High Team Wins at State Engineering, Math and Science Competition

Congratulations to Brentwood High School students Will Cuthbertson, Jake Henry, Philip Ooi, Iain Woodburn, Dennis Sun, Deven Bhuva, Lisa Qu and Hadley Hilgenhurst.

They won first place in the ninth and tenth grade group at the Tests in Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science Competition. Their teacher is Ashley Seth.

 

BHS Team Wins at State Engineering, Math and Science Competition

A second Brentwood High School team won first place at this year's Tests in Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science Competition. Akash Oza, Luke Donahue, Brandon Green, Austin Southard-Smith, Kimberly Eddleman, Nisha Bhuva, Taylor Streaty and Joyce Kang won first place for the eleventh and twelfth grade group. Their teacher is Ashley Seth.

 

Brentwood High Students Win State DECA Competition

Brentwood High School students Corey Fawcett and Web Massengale won first place in the Financial Services Team Decision Making category at the Tennessee DECA competition.

DECA is an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Their teacher at Brentwood High School is Lisa Nease.

Brentwood High School student JoJo Liddell won first place in the Restaurant Services Marketing category at the Tennessee DECA competition.

Brentwood High School student Hannah Overmyer won first place in the Hotel and Lodging Marketing category at the Tennessee DECA competition.

Brentwood High Students Win at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Competition

Brentwood High School students Ben Sherrill, Thomas Tatum, Thomas Wolf won first place in the Animation category at the Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville.

The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards.

Their teacher is Ronnie Adcock.

 

BHS Students Win at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Competition

Brentwood High School students Josh Jirjis, Zach Madell, Grayson Propst and Danielle Wilson won first place in the Music Video category at the Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville.

The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards.

Brentwood High Students Win at National Forensic League Competition

Brentwood High’s Natalie Bennett won the Congressional Debate House 1, and Rebekah Ninan won the Congressional Debate House 2 at the state National Forensic League Competition. Harriet Medlin is their teacher.

The National Forensic League is the national honor society for secondary and middle school speech and debate. Their mission is to help students become effective communicators, critical thinkers and engaged, ethical members of society.

 

BHS Student Wins Speech and Drama League Competition

Brentwood High’s Sarath Pavuluri won first place in the Congress category at this year's Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League Competition. His teacher is Harriet Medlin.

The Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League is a professional association for speech and theater educators throughout the state.

 

 


Centennial Students Take First at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Competition

Centennial High students Caleb Simons and Tarrik Walker won first place in the Public Service Announcement category at the Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville.

The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards.

Their teacher is Dawn Marek.

 

CHS Students Win SKILLS USA Award

Centennial High School students Patrick Mills, Toby Renfrow and Noah Shirley Winning won the SKILLS USA award for their Capstone Student Project Showcase Arts, Audiovisual Technology and Communications. Dawn Marek is their teacher.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The organization has 13,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations.

 

Clovercroft Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

The Clovercroft Elementary team won first place at this year's Destination Imagination state tournament. Team members are Kylie Enriquez, Molly Keffer, Claudia Farnell, Sierra Scott, Jaya Cluff and Zoe Miles. Their coaches are Craig Miles and Christina Scott, and the DI Coordinator is Crystal James.

Destination Imagination is an educational program where student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments. The Tennessee tournament was held April 13 in Nashville.

 

Crockett Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

Crockett Elementary’s Destination Imagination team won first place at this year's Destination Imagination state tournament in the category of In Disguise. Team members are Eli Bullock-Papa, Ella Bullock-Papa, Eliana Gallagher, Andrei Gaylord, Greta LI, Savitha Samudrala and Rohan Tyagi. Their coaches are Nancy Gallgher and Kairali Samudrala.

Fairview Middle Student Wins State and National Wrestling Championships

Fairview Middle School's Joshua Ortiz- Derrick won the 2013 AAU Middle School Wrestling Tennessee State Champion and the 2013 Nationals Duals All American. His coaches are James Derrick, Tom Herring and Don Barnett.

 

 

 

 

Franklin High Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

Franklin High’s McKenzie Bottoms, Marjory Day, Ashley DePeri, Ella Dermon, Andie Fisher and Sarah Southern won in the category of In Disguise at this year's Destination Imagination state tournament. Their coach is Leigh Justus.

Grassland Middle Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

Grassland Middle School students Siena Rozzelle, Katie Thornton, Amelia Mitchell, Zach Helton, Austin Sparks and Gibbs Bedenbaugh won first place in the A List category at this year's Destination Imagination state tournament. The coaches are Robert Bedenbaugh and Rachel Bedenbaugh, and the school sponsor is Jennifer Keith.

Heritage Elementary Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

Heritage Elementary’s Destination Imagination team won first place in the Twist A Rama competition at this year's Destination Imagination state tournament. Team members include Logan Bock, Dylan Fichter, Zach Smith, Madison Staffen, Madison Kalb, Estella Pennell and Sarah Ward. Their coach is Debbie Smith.

Independence Student Wins Award at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Competition

Independence High School Senior Jackie Jones won first place in the Sound category at the Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville.

The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards.

Her teacher is Matt Balzer.

 

 

IHS Student Wins SKILLS USA Award

Independence High School student Courtney Smith won first place in the Advertising Design competition of this year's SKILLS USA state competition. Her teacher is Stephanie Prewitt.

Kenrose Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

Kenrose Elementary’s Destination Imagination team won first place in the Twist A Rama competition at this year's Destination Imagination state competition. Team members include Jack Berexa, Kelsey Blood, Clark Danelz, Weston Geuther, Zara Malik, Emily Mastroleo and Lily Wilson. Their team managers are Cindy Danelz, Christy Geuther and Kristin Berexa.

Ravenwood Students Win at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Competition

Ravenwood High School students Aaron Mirtes and Brad Belemjian won first place in the Talent category at the Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville.

The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards.

Their teacher is Laura Faber.

 

Ravenwood Student Wins at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Competition

Ravenwood High School's Aaron Mirtes also won the first place award for Directing at this year's Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville.

The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards.

Ravenwood Students Win State Science Competition

Ravenwood High School students Frances Ding and Eric Yang won first place in the Chemistry Lab competition at this year's Tennessee State Science Olympiad. Their teachers are Avril Buerstetta and Amy Maffei.

The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers.

Teams of 15 students develop their teamwork and problem solving throughout the year in preparation for each of the events. Teams initially compete in one-day regional tournaments that are held at several locations throughout Tennessee. The top 18 teams advance to the state tournament held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Ravenwood High School student Josh Mucci won first place in the After Dinner Speaking competition at the Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League Competition. His teacher is Kelly Duyn.

Ravenwood High student Ross Hildabrand won first place in the Extemporaneous Speaking contest at the Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League Competition. His teacher is Kelly Duyn.

Woodland Middle Team Wins at Destination Imagination Competition

Woodland Middle School students Benjamin Callahan, Megha Chitturi, Emily Lu, Keenan Jensen, Zoe Rozine and Lauren Shepard placed first in the category of IN The Zone at this year's Destination Imagination state tournament. Lora Westlund is the teacher sponsor, and Kabrina Rozine is the coach.
