Student Spotlight Awards are given to Williamson County students who placed first in state or national competitions. Each Student Spotlight award winner is recognized before the School Board at their monthly meeting. Listed below are the district's Student Spotlight Award winners for the month of February.
Brentwood Student Receives Gold Key Award for Artwork
Congratulations to Brentwood High School Student Zoe Schlacter. Her art portfolio received a Gold Key award at the 2013 Scholastic Art Awards.
Zoe's portfolio will be on display at Cheekwood Art Museum from Friday, February 1 until Saturday, March 3. Her teacher is Barbara Bullard.

Brentwood Middle Student Receives Scholastic Art Competition Gold Key Award
Brentwood Middle School Eighth Grader Gavin Bain received a Regional Gold Key award for his abstracted cardboard sculpture at the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. His teacher at BMS is Maggie Tucker.
His artwork will be exhibited at Cheekwood Art Museum from Friday, February 1 until Saturday, March 3. Works that receive gold key recognition will be sent to New York to be judged on a national level.
Centennial High Student Named National Merit Finalist

Centennial High Student Receives Scholastic Art Competition Gold Key
Centennial High School's Curtis Evers was one of 21 students who received a Gold Key award in the drawing category at this year's Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. His teacher at CHS is Betty McIntyre.
The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers identifies students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their work to a national audience through this annual contest.
Curtis' artwork will be exhibited at Cheekwood Art Museum from Friday, February 1 until Saturday, March 3.

Franklin High Students Win First Place at Linguistic Olympiad
Four Franklin High School students were honored at Middle Tennessee State University's annual Linguistic Olympiad competition.
The team comprised of Matthew Rutledge, Kenzie Bottoms, Andie Fisher and Jon McClung won first place overall. The nearly three hour long competition consists of 12 problems in a variety of different languages.
Two other Franklin High School teams also competed at the event winning second place overall and an honorable mention.
Independence Junior Elected President of TN Thespian Executive Board
Independence High School Student Landon Meldrum was recently voted President of 2013-14 Tennessee Thespian Exectuive Board.
Landon ran for the position while attending last month's Tennessee State Thespian Conference, which featured more than 900 high school students from across the state.
Landon's teacher at IHS is Rebecca Williams.

Independence Student Receives American Vision Award for Artwork
Congratulations to Independence High School Student Charlotte Lacroix. She received the American Vision Award at the 2013 Scholastic Art Awards for her photograph titled Remember When.
The American Vision Award is given to the best overall artwork from each region. In addition, Lacroix received three Gold Key awards for her artwork titled Vanilla, L'apres-midi and Remember When.
Her art will be on display at Cheekwood Art Museum from Friday, February 1 until Saturday, March 3. Her teacher is Stephanie Prewitt.
Middle College High Student Receives Gold Key Award for Artwork
Congratulations to Middle College High School Student Carsen Meerdink. Her painting titled The Spirit of Middle College received a Gold Key award at the 2013 Scholastic Art Awards.
Carsen's artwork will be on display at Cheekwood Art Museum from Friday, February 1 until Saturday, March 3. Her teacher is Jennifer Baltimore.

RHS Sophomore Earns Gold Medal in the National Classical Etymology Exam
Ravenwood High School Sophomore Gene Li recently received a Gold Medal in the National Classical Etymology Exam.
This exam tests students' knowledge of Latin and Greek roots and the English derivatives that come from those roots. Li's Latin Teacher at Ravenwood is Jason Nabors.
Gene Li Named to National Honor Band/Orchestra
There's more to Ravenwood High School Student Gene Li than just his academic prowess. Li also excels in the area of the arts.
He plays violin in the Ravenwood orchesta and was just named a member of the National Honor Orchestra, which features some of the best high school musicians from around the country.
The National Honor Orchestra will perform next month during the Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis. Li's teacher at RHS is Allison Cowen.
Ravenwood Student Wins Siemens Foundation Award
Ravenwood High School Senior Frances Ding has been named the Tennessee winner of the 2012-13 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement.
The awards recognize the nation’s top achievers in Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with a $2,000 college scholarship to one male and one female student in each state.
Two national winners (one male and one female) are also recognized, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. This year, 101 high school students in all 50 states – including 93 seniors and 8 juniors – were honored.
Ravenwood Students Named to National Honor Band
Ravenwood High School Students Danielle Maeng and Laura Egyed have both been named to the National Honor Band. Maeng plays the flute and Egyed plays the trumpet.
They will now perform alongside some of the best high school musicians in the country at the 2013 Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis March 14-16. Their Band Director at RHS is Mark Kinzer.
