Student Project Brings Smiles to Elderly

Published March 7, 2013

Students at Sunset Middle School are making a difference in their community. Members of the school's National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) recently concluded their spring service project called Boxes of Love.

The project began with a school-wide donation drive to collect items like socks, slippers and toiletries. Students then spent hours decorating shoe boxes, which they filled with the donated items.

On Saturday, February 9, the students traveled to the Claiborne Hughes Health Center in Franklin where they entertained the residents with a variety show. Eighth grader Reed Ulery coordinated the talent show and NJHS President Logan Dorsey organized the visit.

Afterwards, the boys and girls wished each resident a Happy Valentine's Day as they hand-delivered the gift boxes, which contained socks, crossword puzzle books, playing cards and toiletry items.
