Storm Damage Repairs Underway at Ravenwood High

Published January 24, 2013

Crews continue to work on cleaning up the portion of Ravenwood High School that was damaged by today’s early morning storms. A portion of the roof over the D hall was torn off, affecting many of the science and math classrooms on the second floor. A total of 11 classrooms were damaged out of the approximately 80 spaces, five on the second floor and six on the first.

Workers expect that all wet areas will be cleaned and dry today, and a temporary roof will be in place as well. All ceiling tiles are also being replaced. Repairs will also include replacing building materials such as insulation and drywall on the second floor that were damaged by the water.

In response to concerns about mold in the rooms, Maintenance Director Mark Samuels said, “Our crews are working too quickly to allow for the growth of mold, but we will continue to monitor the situation.”

Teachers whose classrooms were affected are holding classes in the gym and RPAC. Principal Dr. Pam Vaden said she is proud of the way teachers and students have adjusted to the disruptive day. “We implemented our Power Monday schedule, and teachers and students haven’t missed a beat," said Vaden. "Some teachers are emailing lessons and study guides to students; some are using online textbooks. They are making the best of this situation.”

School personnel will continue to make adjustments to classroom meeting locations while the repair process takes place, and further information will be communicated to parents by the school.
