Fairview Elementary PTO Introduces Spanish Liaison

The Fairview Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization introduced a brand new board position this year.

Bilingual parent Sandra Saavedra is the group's Spanish liaison. Her duties will include translating PTO newsletters for Spanish speaking parents, translating PTO meetings as they are happening and opening up volunteer opportunities in the schools.

PTO leaders say they've already seen results. Three families who may not have been inclined to attend PTO meetings in the past because of language differences were in attendance at the September 20 meeting.

Administrators say they're happy to see families reaching across cultural lines to support students at Fairview Elementary.

"I love the fact that our PTO is proactively reaching out to all families," said Fairview Elementary Principal Joan Tidwell. "We want our parents to have every opportunity to participate in their child's education and this is a great way to support that effort."
