Commissioner Approves Changes to School Calendar
Published April 4, 2013
The Williamson County Schools 2012-13 calendar for students will end two days early. The Tennessee Commissioner of Education granted approval to the request after the Williamson County Board of Education approved the calendar change April 15.
The school district learned of the option from the State Department of Education last week when the department told school districts that unused stockpiled inclement weather days could be used for professional development. Officials plan to use the two days to train teachers in Common Core Standards.
"We welcome the opportunity to have all teachers looking at the Common Core implementation plan for next year before they leave for the summer," said WCS Professional Development Coordinator Laurette Carle. "Elementary teachers will also have an opportunity to be introduced to their newly adopted reading program for use in the fall to help them with planning for a strong start next year. Most teachers will continue this learning at various professional development activities during the summer in smaller, more focused groups."
The school year for students will end with a full day on Tuesday, May 21. The final day for teachers will remain the same, Friday, May 24, but teachers will spend Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24 in professional development.
Classified employees, who are not 11 or 12 month employees, will be given the option to work or begin summer break early.
