College Visit Checklist

Published February 21, 2013

Now is the time of year when thousands of Williamson County high school underclassmen begin weighing their options as they decide on a college or university.

While visiting college websites, reading university guidebooks and speaking with trusted advisors can be helpful, nothing will provide you with a more realistic experience than visiting the campus for yourself.

Spending a weekend at a few of your top choices of colleges can be invaluable when the time comes to choose a school. Here are a few tips for what to look out for when visiting a college campus:

  • Sit in on a class that interests you. If classes aren't in session, see what the classrooms are like.
  • Talk to students about what they think of their classes, professors and dorm rooms.
  • Take a guided tour of the campus.
  • Visit the dining hall, fitness center, library and other campus facilities.
  • Walk or drive around the community surrounding the campus.
  • Visit your department of interest.
  • Check out the freshmen dorms and stay overnight with a student, if possible.
