Clovercroft Celebrates International Day

Published May 17, 2013

Students at Clovercroft Elementary School traveled the world May 14 as the school celebrated its very first International Day. Classrooms were set up with artifacts, activities and presentations on five different countries.

“The purpose of International Day is to celebrate diversity in our school,” said ESL Teacher Shauna Wells. “We have students from over 24 different countries and they speak 24 different languages. We are just celebrating all our different ethnicities and cultures.”

Students got to visit Mexico, Italy, Spain, India and Japan. Parents volunteered their time to organize various activities and presentations for the students which included origami, henna tattoos, learning how to use chop sticks and playing games from different countries.

Students decorated the hallways with artwork and flags from their country and performed dances, songs and poems in a school wide assembly.

“The overall goal is to celebrate our differences, but to know we are all here for the same reason,” said Wells. “We are here to improve our learning, to learn to be responsible, to be caring citizens of our world and to respect one another.”
