Below is a list of recent accomplishments by Williamson County students in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. They are listed in alphabetical order according to school.
WCS Students Receive Arlene Peterson Memorial Scholarship
Three Williamson County students were recently named recipients of the Arlene Peterson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was created by the Cool Springs Rotary Club as a way to recognize outstanding high school seniors who are graduating with a Career and Technical Education focus.
The WCS recipients of this year's scholarships are:
Grayson Propst- Brentwood High School - Broadcasting
Patrick Rybak – Page High School - Drafting
Cheyenne Reed- Centennial High School- Drafting
Each student will receive a $1,000 Arlene Peterson Scholarship. These winners were recognized and presented with their scholarships at the May 6 Cool Springs Rotary Club meeting.
Bethesda Student Wins Recycling Sculpture Contest
Alex Carter, a second grader in Ryan Linton’s class at Bethesda Elementary, won the Keep Williamson Beautiful Recycling Sculpture Contest. She won $250 for her classroom, and her sculpture will be on display at the Williamson County Fair.
Brentwood Middle Band Students Earn High Marks
The following seventh and eighth grade Brentwood Middle School band students earned a rating of Superior for their solo performance in the 2013 Middle Tennessee Band and Orchestra sponsored Solo Festival: Matthew Donahue, Natalie Kruse, Matthew Fitzsimmons, Riya Jain, Nathan DeMonico, Josie Frazier, Elijah Spears and Katie Penrod.
These students earned a rating of Excellent in their festival performance: Keelie Kruse, Seth Cann and Simon Bashour.
CHS Students Win SkillsUSA State Competition
Congratulations to the SkillsUSA State Competition winners from Centennial High School. Patrick Mills, Noah Shirley and Toby Renfrow won first place in the Capstone Student Project Showcase Arts, Audiovisual Technology and Communications.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The organization has 13,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations and serves more than 300,000 students and instructors annually.
Fairview Middle Band
The Fairview Middle School Choirs and Band recently traveled to Cincinnati for a music festival at King’s Island. The results are listed below:

2nd place mixed: FMS Chamber Singers Superior rating (94/100)
1st place Women’s Choir: FMS Women’s Choir Superior rating (95/100)

Franklin High Media Students Receive Award of Excellence
The Franklin High School Broadcasting III Honors class was awarded their first MidSouth Student Television Award of Excellence for the Franklin High School Lip Dub which was produced on Friday, December 14, 2012.
There were about 30 students involved in producing the video with the coordination of about 1,700 students, faculty and staff. The FHS Lip Dub can be viewed at http://wcstube.wcs.edu/Play.aspx?VideoId=703.
In addition, FHS students Andy Bennett and James Hallock were recently recognized for their Games Club video at the Western Kentucky Film Festival at Western Kentucky University. Several other broadcasting students were nominated for their videos as well.
Grassland Elementary Student Wins Award for Short Story
Grassland Elementary School second grader Lauren Stockdale was honored at the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) Brentwood Woman's Club Celebration of Youth, Poets and Writers awards reception. Her story, The Pumpkin Patch, won second place in the category 1 short story division.
The story also won third place in the Music City District competition. The Brentwood Women’s club donated a hardbound copy of the winning stories and poems to the Grassland Elementary School library.
Hillsboro Students Receive Band Bash Awards
Congratulations to all of the students who received recognition May 7 at Hillsboro School's second annual Band Bash.
Director’s Award Winners: These students truly exemplify what it means to be a member of The Hillsboro Band.
Riley Coleman - 7th Grade Jack Sisson - 6th Grade
Outstanding Musicians: The students pictured below were named Outstanding Musicians for their grade level. Awards were presented for best woodwind, best brass, best percussion, and most improved.
Overall Award Winners: The students pictured below were honored for their excellence throughout the year, regardless of grade level. Students were recognized for Outstanding Musicianship, Jazz Achievement, Citizenship, Leadership, and Esprit de Corps, among others.
Nolensville Fifth Grader Earns Black Belt
After eight years of training, Nolensville Elementary School fifth grader Mackenzy Ramirez achieved the rank of Shodan, First Degree Black Belt on May 11.
The test lasted eight hours and consisted of self-defense, sparring, endurance and forms as well as blocks, kicks and strikes. After the challenging test, she celebrated with family and friends by chowing down on her favorite food, pizza.
Less than one percent of students who begin a rigorous karate program continue on to achieve the rank of Shodan.
Page High DECA Students Place in Top 10 at International Competition
Page High School students Ryan Holguin, Taylor Elliott and John Henry Graner finished in the Top 10 for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at this year's International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. The competition pitted them against students from all over the world.
DECA is an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. The DECA High School Division includes 185,000 members in 5,000 schools.
Spring Station Softball Team Wins County Championship
Spring Station Middle School has yet another championship banner to hang making a unprecedented total of five championships this year. The latest banner comes from the softball team.
The Lady Mustangs defeated Page by a score of 9-1 May 15 to become the county champions. The Lady Mustangs started out hot with Shelby Penning hitting the first pitch hard down the third baseline for a double. The girls ended up scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning.
Amber Wright was on base all three attempts as was Alyvia Kincaid who also added three RBIs. Kaitlyn Woodside was 2-3 and Taylor Turner added two RBIs with a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly. Taylor Turner and Erin Elliott were the winning pitcher/catcher duo holding Page to just three hits in five innings of play.
Summit High Wins District Soccer Title
Congratulations to the Summit High School boys soccer team for winning the district championship. They defeated Page High by a score of 4-3.
Woodland Middle Athlete Recognized on 104.5 The Zone
Congratulations are in order for Woodland Middle School student Katie Bendrick who was recognized on air on 104.5 The Zone as being nominated for the Ascend Ring of Honor for her accomplishments on the Lacrosse field and in the classroom. With her nomination, Woodland is entered into a drawing for a $500 donation from Ascend Federal Credit Union.
Woodland Middle Students Win Youth in Government Award
Congratulations to Woodland Middle School students Lany Sharara, Hyungtaek Shin and Ishan Sathe. They received an award for Outstanding Bill at the YMCA Youth in Government Conference.
WMS Band Members Earn High Marks at Festival
More than 100 Woodland Middle School band students participated in the MTASBOA Solo and Ensemble Festival at Oliver Middle School. Out of the 102 who participated, 81 students received the highest rating possible of Superior. Twenty-one received the second highest score of Excellent.
