Bethesda Fifth Grader Recognized by Saddle Club

Congratulations to Bethesda Elementary School Fifth Grader Hannah Bennett. She rides and shows horses for the Triune Saddle Club where she recently won two belt buckles for Champion and Reserve honors.

Centennial Student Chosen to Lay Wreath on Tomb of Unknown Soldier

Centennial High School Student Jonathan Pointer received a very special honor during a recent visit to Washington D.C. where he was attending this year's Jobs for America’s Graduates National Student Leadership Conference.

Prior to attending the conference, Jonathan had written and submitted several essays; one on character and one on the relevance of agriculture in society today.

From over 500 essays, his was chosen giving him the honor of placing a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Jonathan is pictured in the photo to the left along with a female student from Arizona.

CHS Student to Play Volleyball at Birmingham-Southern

Centennial High School Senior Caroline Hyde has signed to play volleyball at Birmingham-Southern College this fall. Caroline is a middle blocker/hitter who earned multiple awards during high school: Best Blocker 2011 and 2012 seasons, Coaches Character Award 2010 and JV MVP 2009, as well as being named to the District All-Tournament team twice.

Caroline's enthusiasm and consistent leadership throughout her high school and travel seasons earned her the respect of her teammates and coaches. She is an honors student with a 4.31 GPA and plans to major in pre-law at BSC.

Grassland Educator Named 4-H Outstanding Teacher

Grassland Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Natalie Patterson has been named a 2012 4-H Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Patterson was honored December 4 at the 56th annual 4-H Achievement Banquet.

4-H is the largest youth development organization in the nation. It is open to all students in grades 4-12 and is designed to teach them about the importance of leadership, service and communications.

Longview Students Compete in DAR Essay Contest

Longview Elementary School Social Studies teacher Al Roberson sent six local winners to the chapter level of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Essay Contest in December.

Ryan Rager-Aguiar’s essay won the chapter level and will be sent on to the next phase of the competition. Grey Deyo came in second.

The students were asked to write about the unsung heroes from the Revolutionary War. Rager-Aguiar was recently acknowledged during the school assembly by Ginger Manley from the Old Glory DAR Chapter.

Page Middle School Wrestling Team Wins County Championship

The Page Middle School Wrestling Team finished first in the county this year. The Panthers won the WMAA County Championship December 8. Below is a photo of the team celebrating its win.

Page High Students Compete at TSA Regional Competition

Page High School was well represented at this year's Technology Student Association (TSA) Regional Competition. A number of students won awards and will move on to compete at the state competition in March.

Ravenwood Students Earn Science Olympiad Victory

The Ravenwood High School Science Olympiad team won first place at the Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament at Pope John Paul II High School.

Team members include John Asirvatham, Kathryn Copeland, Gabby Dent, Frances Ding, Zach Glick, Mitchell Gordon, Austin Hetherington, Gene Li, Niman Mann, Ryan McGinnity, Ashwin Sundaram, Kavya Sundaram, Rohan Tummala, Stanley Xiang and Eric Yang.

Remember Science Olympiad is a multi-tiered hands-on competition composed of 23 events designed to promote achievement in high school science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Each student participated in at least two events and placed in at least one event. The team will participate in a regional tournament March 2 and if they place high enough, the team will compete in the state tournament April 6.

Sunset Middle School Student Makes the 2011-12 USA Swimming Top 10 List

Congratulations to Sunset Middle School Seventh Grader Kendall Kitahara for making the 2011-12 USA Swmming Top 10 List.

Each year, USA Swimming compiles the times of swimmers across the country and releases the names of the top 10 swimmers for each age group. Kendall was ranked seventh in the country in the Age 11 1650 Freestyle. Her recorded time was 18:36.56.

The top athletes are recognized online and in a special section of Splash magazine.
