Independence High Band Earns Recognition
The Independence High School Marching Band recently won the Class A Championship at the Band Masters Competition in Memphis. Independence was the only class champions to sweep all captions in their class including music, visual, general effect, percussion and color guard.
In addition, the color guard placed fourth overall for the day regardless of class size and percussion had the highest percussion score of the day winning best overall percussion.
"It has been a great year for the students," said IHS Band Director Chris Cooper. "They have worked hard and achieved high."
Page High Cross Country Team Named Region Champs
Congratulations to the Page High School Cross Country team for winning the Regional Cross Country Championship October 26. Five team members participated in the winning score for Page. Those students are Kevin O'Toole, Tristan Lonergran, Steele Palombo, Lee Pennington and Jacob Powell. They are coached by Marian Andreescu.
Page High Students Inducted into NTHS
Congratulations to the Page High School students who were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society October 31. They include Matthew Bolton, Jacob Buford, Wilson Cochrane, Leah French, Makenna Hart, Caroline Hill, Brenna Minyard, Alec Persch, Mikaela Redlin, Brittney Runnion, Patrick Rybak, Grant Santilli, Ali Schwartz, Jessica Sokol, Carson Stafford, Amanda Wilck, Katherine Wright and Jessica Zweifel.
The National Technical Honor Society is an organization that provides recognition for excellence in career and technical education. The NTHS also provides scholarship opportunities for members.
Ravenwood Band Honored at Recent Competition
Congratulations to the Ravenwood High School Marching Band. They were named the US Bands Tennessee State Marching Champions for Class V Bands. The band swept all three captions of music, visual and effect. The Ravenwood High School Marching band is directed by Mark Kinzer. Their next competition will be the National Championships in Indianapolis November 8-10.
Ravenwood Students Receive Scholarships in Math Contest
Fifteen Ravenwood High School students recently competed against hundreds of students from 47 high schools in the UT Pro2Serve Mathematics Contest.
The contest was held October 25 in Knoxville. All participants took a multiple-choice test on algebra and geometry called the Fundamental Exams of Remarkable Mathematical Ability and Talent (FERMAT I).
Students with the top 50 scores on the FERMAT I moved on to the FERMAT II, which included eight essay questions requiring creative and original thinking.
Five of the students who made it past the first round were from Ravenwood. They included Frances Ding, Zachary Glick, Gene Li, Jordan Widjaja and Stanley Ziang. Frances Ding and Gene Li both placed in the top five on the Fermat I, while Ding and Glick finished in the top five on the Fermat II test.
In addition, Glick was named one of 10 students at the competition who will receive a $4,000 annual scholarship to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Ding received an Honorable Mention, and Li was recognized as one of the five top scoring students at the event.
Summit High Marching Band Wins 1st Place in Class in Second Year
Despite being only two years old, the Summit High School Marching band had an impressive showing at the US Bands Tennessee State Marching Championship. The Spartan Marching band placed first in Class 3A and won best music, visual and percussion.
