Advisory Council Gives Students a Voice

Selected students from each Williamson County high school met with Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney October 2 to share their thoughts on a wide range of topics. The students are members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council and were selected by their school’s administration to participate.

Looney and Assistant Superintendent of Middle and High Schools Dr. Donna Wright collected student input on BYOT, Advanced Placement classes and ACT preparation, in addition of other topics. Some of the advice students provided to the district leaders included emphasizing to middle school students the importance of being successful in your freshman year of high school and the need to learn study skills at all ability levels.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to hear directly from the students,” said Looney. “And they are honest and thoughtful in their responses. I believe they can help us continue to grow and improve as a district.”

Students also shared a desire to participate in life skills classes that wouldn’t affect their GPA; posed the question of who determines what students get into certain classes; and thoroughly discussed the topic of changing the definition of regular, honors and AP classes.

“I was so impressed with this group of students,” said Wright. “It was enlightening to spend time with them. I look forward to our next meeting.”

The group will meet at least once a semester. Below is a list of the students who make up this year's advisory council.
