Published February 7, 2013

This award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a $10 gift card to Sonic Drive-In and a free gift courtesy of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More in Franklin.

Bradley Weaver - Fairview Elementary School

Fairview Elementary School Third Grader Bradley Weaver is an excellent student who's known for his positive attitude and great work habits. So it's no wonder he was chosen as the school's Academic All-Star for the 2012-13 school year.

"Bradley is a leader when it comes to doing the right thing and making excellent choices," said Fairview Elementary Teacher Janice Kirk. "He uses fantastic manners; he is responsible; and he always has his homework."

Bradley has attended Fairview Elementary since kindergarten and says the teachers are great. His favorite subject is science and he enjoys staying physically active. Bradley showed off his athleticism by winning the Hawk Walk for his class.

When he's not in school, Bradley likes to play video games and help out around the house.

"Bradley has been very supportive of his mom while she has gone back to school to be a teacher," said Kirk. "He does extra chores at home and washes the dishes so his mom can complete her school work."

While he's not sure yet what he wants to be when he grows up, Bradley says he understands the importance of getting a good education and will keep working hard in the future.

Kandis Avery - Independence High School

Sixteen year-old Kandis Avery is a hardworking student whose commitment to excellence is second to none. That's why administrators at Independence High School say Kandis is their school's Academic All-Star.

“Kandis has been great to have as a student here," said Principal Dr. Todd Campbell. "She is always personable and open to helping others. Also, she has done a lot to improve her grades and overall GPA."

Kandis, a junior at IHS, says her favorite subjects are science and Spanish. Kandis is dual enrolled at Columbia State Community College where she is currently taking English Composition 1020.

"It has been a good experience," said Kandis. "I like the fact that I get to be in a class with college kids because it gives me an idea of what it will be like when I get to college."

As for future plans, Kandis says she'd like to attend either Georgia State or Vanderbilt and dreams of one day becoming a physician.

"My education is important to me because without education there is nothing," said Kandis. "If I want to show people that I have what it takes to be successful then I have to get a good education and make something out of myself."

Fernanda Aguilar - Lipscomb Elementary School

Fifth Grader Fernanda Aguilar has been named Lipscomb Elementary School's Academic All-Star for the 2012-13 school year. Administrators say Fernanda's determination to succeed was a big reason why she was selected for this honor.

"Fernanda is a student who has been putting forth great effort this school year," said Principal Michelle Contich. "She tries really hard and maintains a positive attitude."

Fernanda began attending Lipscomb in first grade and says she's grateful for all of the wonderful teachers who have helped her along the way.

"I really like the teachers here," said Fernanda. "They helped me learn to read and write, and reading is my favorite subject."

Not only is Fernanda known at school as someone who routinely gives 100 percent, but teachers say she is also a generous student who is always willing to help others.

"Fernanda is a caring, thoughtful student that all of her peers can rely on," said Fifth Grade Teacher Jody Liddell. "She is a student who always gives her personal best."
