Alex Cook - Edmondson Elementary

Eleven year old Alex Cook is known throughout Edmondson Elementary School as a model student who always gives 110 percent. That's why teachers say she's the perfect choice for Edmondson Elementary's Academic All-Star.

"Alex epitomizes what teachers look for in successful students," said Fifth Grade Teacher Tina Hunter. "Her attention to detail gives her work extra polish, and her organization assures she is always prepared. No matter what challenge is offered, Alex uses her initiative and thinking skills to take charge of her own learning."

Alex and her family moved to Tennessee when she was in third grade. She says the teachers at Edmondson are great and her favorite subject is math. "I like doing all of the equations," said Alex. "It's neat to see all of the cool things and tricks you can figure out with math."

When she's not in school, Alex spends much of her time playing the piano and singing. "I've been taking piano lessons for about four years and I sing at a studio in Franklin," said Alex. "I just like getting on stage and performing for other people."

With dreams of one day becoming a famous singer, Alex says she understands the importance of a good education and will continue to work hard on her studies.

"School is important to me because it means a lot to get all A's on your report card," said Alex. "It feels good to know that I've worked really hard and accomplished my goals."

Ansley Harbin - Grassland Elementary

Grassland Elementary School fifth grader Ansley Harbin is a dedicated student who's known for her work ethic. Whether she's studying math or playing sports, Ansley is always willing to put in the extra work required to reach her goals.

That's why no one was surprised when Ansley was named Grassland Elementary School's Academic All-Star for the 2012-13 school year.

"Ansley is an Academic All-Star in every sense of the term," said Ansley's Fifth Grade Teacher Susan Tyree. "She goes above and beyond in her effort to become a better student."

Having attended Grassland since kindergarten, Ansley says her experience at the school has been incredible. "I like all the teachers here," said Ansley. "They're very nice and they always help me out when I need it."

Ansley's favorite subject is math which she says she's been working hard to improve in this year. When she's not in school, Ansley is busy playing her favorite sports which include soccer, basketball and baseball.

Ansley began playing baseball five years ago and is a pitcher for her team. While she enjoys playing sports, Ansley says education will always come first.

"I want to do well in school because I want to get into a good college and get a degree," said Ansley.

Sara Ross - Grassland Middle

Always try your best. That's sixth grader Sara Ross' secret for success. Ross was recently selected as Grassland Middle's Academic All-Star for the 2012-13 school year.

Teachers say Sara is a joy to have in the classroom and that her enthusiastic personality and solid work ethic is second to none. As for Sara, she feels fortunate to attend a school like Grassland Middle.

"Meeting the new teachers this year was really fun because they're all very nice," said Sara. "I also play clarinet in the band which has been great because we're always learning new music."

While she enjoys language arts, Sara says her favorite subject is science, mostly because she likes to conduct experiments.

"We did this marshmallow experiment where you put a marshmallow in the microwave and see how big it will get," said Sara. "That was really cool."

Outside of school, Sara likes to sing and put on performances for her family. She also enjoys playing with her two siblings, even though they don't always get along.

"I have a younger brother who's in fourth grade and a twin sister," said Sara. "We sometimes get in fights but I probably couldn't live without them. They're pretty awesome."

Though she's only in sixth grade, Sara says she already has a pretty good idea of what she wants to do when she gets older.

"I really want to be a teacher when I grow up," said Sara. "I'm doing a report about it in language arts right now and I just think that teaching would be a lot of fun."
