Rumor Mill-5080
Published July 19, 2012
The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating. If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of IN FOCUS. Below are some of the questions we received since our last issue.
I’m the mom of a rising fifth grader in Williamson County Schools. I remember last summer that we heard the wonderful news that Williamson County Schools were #1 in the state for TCAP scores. Are we #1 again this year or have we just not heard yet?
The Tennessee Department of Education has embargoed information regarding district-wide TCAP results; therefore we are unable to share it with the public until the State gives us permission. Once we have received permission from the State, we will post the information in IN FOCUS.
Is there any way that parents can be polled to get our input about the school calendar, specifically breaks? For instance, I’d like to know if other families are interested in changing our fall break to one full week instead of having the full week at Thanksgiving, or having spring break at some time other than the week before Easter. The system encourages parents not to pull children out of school, but there is no good time (outside of the summer) for families to take vacations because the rates tend to be higher around these holidays, and many spend time with extended family.
The School Board sets calendar parameters for the staff and then determines the calendar based on staff recommendations. We recommend you contact your School Board member and let him/her know your thoughts and concerns regarding the school calendar so your Board member may share your input.
Do you know if there will be any rezoning for Summit High School before the 2013-2014 school year? If not, does Summit High School have any open zoning policies? We are less than two minutes away from Summit but are zoned for Independence High School which is seven minutes away (neither one are far but Summit is closer).
At this time, there have been no zoning discussions. Open zoned schools for the 2013-14 school year will be determined by the School Board in the Spring of 2013. Once those schools have been determined, we will post them in IN FOCUS.
