FHS Band Wins $10,000 Prize

Published March 8, 2012

Members of the Franklin High School Marching Band got a big surprise March 5 when they received a $10,000 prize and a performance from the country music duo Thompson Square.

The students had been told they won $5,000 in a contest sponsored by Cricket Wireless Communications and 102.5 The Game, but it wasn't until Monday's check presentation that they learned that number had been doubled to $10,000.

As part of the contest, high school bands were asked to submit audio of their performances. The Top 10 were posted on the radio station's website for people to vote for their favorite. Franklin High won the contest by garnering the most votes.

The Grammy-nominated band Thompson Square helped sweeten the deal for students as they performed a few of their songs including I Got You, Glass and Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not. After their performance, the group posed for pictures with students and signed autographs.

Officials say the money will be used to purchase equipment and to help with travel costs for students who want to compete in national events.
