Randy Box has been one of my most influential teachers, having taught me for the past four years.  He teaches through stories and life experiences, and he places great trust in his students.  Mr. Box’s teaching style allows students to understand personal responsibility, teaches students more about interacting with people and life than any other teacher can, and has helped me change from an awkward, shy, middle school boy to a confident, self-sure young man.

Mark Baker has also been one of my most influential teachers. In class, not only did he teach me how to write but also how to think critically, open my mind, and form opinions about a myriad of subjects.  I learned so much about both the English language and myself through his class and could not have done so without his help.  On the first day of his class, I saw his love for teaching, and his passion for this and his dedication show through the respect and care he directs towards his students.

Dr. Ron Thompson’s AP Spanish class is the hardest class I have taken in high school, but I can’t help but find myself looking forward to it every day.  Dr. Thompson has a way of motivating his students not only to learn the material, but also to love the subject. Being in a classroom with Dr. Thompson, it is really evident that he loves what he does, and more than anything, he cares about his students.  He does everything he can to make his students succeed, and Dr. Thompson always shows that he believes in his students’ abilities.  His passion for teaching coupled with his abilities to motivate and inspire his students makes Dr. Thompson a one-of-a kind teacher.

A Williamson County teacher that has influenced you:
Jerry Stelmaszak is a very special teacher to me because he pushed the limits of what we needed to learn and truly prepared us for the upcoming college classes.  His teaching ability went above and beyond the call of duty and he would never move on until everyone understood the material.  After the class period ended, the door was always open for extra help or for more explanation. He would take time out of his own schedule to find a solution or to create a more detailed answer.  I will always remember the teaching that I received in Mr. Stelmaszak’s classroom and I feel that I can tackle any problems that college throws at me in the fall.

Ashley Seth inspired me to take an in depth look into the subject of biology in Biology Honors, and through that class sparked my love for biology and developed my knowledge in Biology AP, strengthening my understanding and honing my focus on the topic for college.  Her expertise in the field allowed me to view biology from a very professional standpoint, and being in her class had a college-like atmosphere to it, as the responsibility of the student increased and the subject material became more in depth.  Also, Mrs. Seth helped me plan my course outlook for high school, as she explained the most important classes that I should take in order to prepare me for a biology major in college.

The Centennial High School Marching Band has been such an influential part of my life these past four years.  I found some of my best friends, became a leader, and truly found my identity as a person.  None of this could have happened without the dedication of CHS Band Director David Hale.  His love for music is great, but his love for students is unfathomable and he gave every bit of himself to his students.  I have loved him dearly on and off the marching field and I love and admire his selfless, compassionate heart.  His legendary quote of, "It's going to be great!" is such a reflection of the wonderful band program he has led all of these years and he will be missed greatly by all when he retires this year.

Katie Roth

A Williamson County teacher that has influenced you:
Wade Roberts is an influential teacher for many reasons.  He is probably the most dedicated teacher I’ve ever met, constantly going above and beyond for his students.  He never leaves a question unanswered or fails to provide insight.  If someone does not understand something, Mr. Roberts always goes the extra mile by finding more examples or researching for another angle to teach from. “No child left behind” takes on an entire other meaning in his classroom.  However, it is a two-way street.  No one can take Mr. Roberts’ class and expect to put forth anything less than 100 percent effort.  Even though his physics class demands a great deal of time and energy from both teacher and student, he always knows how to brighten up the room.  Whether it be learning about projectile motion, circuits, or waves, you can always count on Mr. Roberts for an exciting demo or a hilarious story.  This is another reason why I have such great respect for him.  It may sound cheesy, but Mr. Roberts actually does make learning fun.  He is a huge inspiration as well as an interesting person to talk to, and it has been a privilege being in his class.

CollegeBoard AP Scholar (2010), Academic Excellence Award (2008, 2009, 2010), Student-Athlete Award of Merit (2008, 2009, 2010), Certificate of Excellence, Algebra II (2009), First Degree Black Belt in taekwondo, USTA Tennessee Junior Team Tennis Championships Sportsmanship Award.

Karen Mauldin has been my chemistry instructor for the past three years – first in Honors, then AP, and finally Chemistry IB this year.  Chemistry is a class that I had looked forward to taking even in middle school, but without the right teacher, it can make for a tough subject.  Mrs. Mauldin was the right teacher.  Not only is she one of the best teachers I have ever had, she goes out of her way to make class fun and interesting with demonstrations and real world applications.  She is also always able and willing to stay after class or during lunch when I need extra help, or even if I just want to try some experiment in the lab.  She has instilled in me a love for chemistry and is largely the reason that I will be majoring in biochemistry in college.  For these reasons and for the wonderful person that Mrs. Mauldin is, she has been one of my favorite teachers in high school, and I certainly will not forget what I have learned from her.

Kelly Calhoun is more than just a gifted teacher.  She truly cares about her students.  I have never had a teacher who put so much time and effort into her classes, and into making sure that every student is successful.  Mrs. Calhoun doesn’t just worry about the present, but prepares her students for college.  She taught me how to write, and that is a skill that I will have for the rest of my life.  English III AP/IB was a ton of work, but none of my time was wasted.  All of the reading, writing, and speaking that I was assigned was meaningful and helped me to improve.  Mrs. Calhoun turned English class, which used to be a chore, into something enjoyable.

I love literature and Cecilia DeKraai has a way of bringing out the best of the books that we read in class. We have many discussions about the books that highlight the themes and meanings of each work. I loved all of the books that we read, and Mrs. DeKraai has helped me open my eyes to the depth and complexity of literature. And while this could be somewhat boring at times with another teacher, Mrs. DeKraai’s incredible sense of humor lights up the classroom. Plus, we both like awesome music.

Raymond Scheetz is one of the best teachers I have ever had.  He cares more about the well being of his students, than any other teacher I have been in contact with.  Although he always had work for you to do, he was never afraid to move turn-in dates back, if other teachers had bogged you down that week.  He also was always there when I needed someone to talk to.  Mr. Scheetz is one of the most caring people you will ever meet.

Karen Mauldin has been my Chemistry teacher for the past three years.  She taught Chemistry Honors, AP, and IB and she is undoubtedly the best teacher I have ever had.  She has a completely unique way of educating, and her passion for Chemistry is undeniable.  I did not think it was possible for a teacher to make his or her students care so much, but Mrs. Mauldin has proved me wrong. She is the sort of teacher who gives up her Mother’s Day for a study session, which is a rare find.  Mrs. Mauldin takes a group of students with completely different interest and skill levels and, with a lot of hard work, turns them in to chemistry scholars.

Honors and Awards:

Kelly Calhoun has aided me in subjects both English and non-English related.  Her class was possibly the most difficult course I ever took in high school.  However, taking English III AP with her vastly improved my ability to comprehend, analyze, and enjoy literature, something I, as a mathematics and sciences oriented person, never expected to do.  Mrs. Calhoun also helped me initiate the first draft of my college application essay, helping me to achieve admission to my top college choice and learn a little about myself as well.

Honors and Awards:

I have had many passionate and devoted teachers at Franklin High School. However, the one that stands out the most to me is Lauri Sims.  I took her Math IB class during my junior year.  It was a small class and she never failed to give us attention when we needed it.  Every day at lunch, Mrs. Sims is always in her classroom helping out at least one student.  She truly loves what she does and it shows in her compassion to her students both inside and outside of school.  Mrs. Sims was never afraid to push her students to do better and showed me how to always strive to achieve more.  She always came to class with great music playing, a smile on her face, and a positive attitude.  She truly made the classroom a learning environment where it was ok to make mistakes, figure out what we did wrong, help each other out and improve.  Mrs. Sims is without a doubt a very special teacher who fully prepares her students for not only for the IB exam but also future math courses.  I am so thankful for having Mrs. Sims as my math teacher.

Brian Keathley always respected  my opinion and  truly listened when people spoke up in class.  He treated the class as if they were mature adults and didn’t attempt to baby us.  The lessons were interesting, and ones that I still remember two years later.  I had never cared about English until my sophomore year.  Between his teaching and Mr. Chesser’s class, it has become obvious  that in order to learn anything from a class, the teacher has to be passionate and always strive to make sure students are being stimulated properly.  Mr. Keathley made sure of this and I shall remember his class fondly when I look back on my high school days.

Instead of solely being interested in what he taught and ensuring that the students learn the information (which he does very well), Josh Phillips also cares genuinely about his students.  He is far more interested in who they are and how he can make a positive impact in their life than how well they know the content of AP European history.  He knows what really matters, and that is the lives of the students.  He earns their respect by caring about them and they, in turn, are much more motivated to do well academically in his class.  I know of many times that he has given real life advice and truly been, not only aware of (which many teachers are not), but helpful and sympathetic towards tough situations that students go through.  He does not just say that he cares, he really does.

Honors and Awards:
Principles List: grades 9-12, AP Scholar Award: 12 grade, AP European History Award: 10 grade, National Honors Society Member: 11-12 grade, Mu Alpha Theta Member: 11-12 grade.

AP English IV has been extremely enjoyable thanks to Mrs. Nicole Guertin.  First, writing isn’t exactly one of my strengths.  I will never forget the day I needed help with structuring a characterization paper.  I was able to sit down at a table with her and discuss my dilemmas and receive feedback from her without feeling like she was limiting my creativity or in a hurry to move along to her next task.  Her witty sense of humor fits so well with our dynamic class, yet she remains objective as our class mediator during discussions.  And even though she strives for subject comprehension, she still holds us responsible for due dates and punctual homework.  This may seem like key objectives as a teacher, but she balances them very well in contrast to other teachers who easily choose one aspect over the other.  As a student, I can tell she is more than willing to teach, and she is a wonderful example to all teachers.

Honors and Awards:
I am currently a member of Scholars, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and our HOSA Executive Council.  In my sophomore year I received the Honors Chemistry award and in my junior year I received the French II Honors award.  And last but not least, I am a proud member of the six time Division II State Champion Marching Patriot Band and 2010 Reserve Grand Champion and our winter drumline, which placed eighth in the world in the 2009 season within the highest division possible.

For two years, Jackie Stevens has taught me all about the world of marketing and entrepreneurship.  Throughout her classes and her advising through DECA and the co-op program, I have come to realize my passion for business.  It has been the most hands-on experience of any class or organization that I have taken part in.  Mrs. Stevens runs her classes in a way that we, as students, are having such an enjoyable experience that we don’t realize we are learning.  We come to realize the knowledge we have acquired when we are out in the world and understand the marketing strategies of businesses, the language of the business world, and the workings of companies around the world.  I now frequently discuss current events and news topics with my parents, as they comment on how much I have learned since beginning my marketing and entrepreneurship classes.  Not only have I learned these essential things, but also Mrs. Stevens is one of the kindest and easiest teachers to get along with.

Honors and Awards:
My partner and I received first place overall in our regional DECA competition and third place in the state competition.  I have received all A's throughout my entire high school career that led me to be in the top ten of my class.  I was chosen from everyone in my age group at my dance studio to receive the "Miss Prima" award for high achievement and maximum participation in my dance classes.  During my junior year, I was chosen by my teacher as the only student to receive the Anatomy Honors award for outstanding achievement out of approximately one hundred students.  I am so honored to receive these awards and hope I can push myself to continue to achieve my goals.  I am the Vice-President of the National Honors Society, the Reporter of DECA and the Secretary of Mu Alpha Theta.

Post-Graduation Plans:
In the fall, I will be attending Western Kentucky University on an academic scholarship and have been chosen to be a part of their Honors College.  I plan to major in exercise science and minor in business administration.  My plans also include traveling abroad to London, England, to Harlaxton College for a semester during my sophomore year.  After my undergraduate career, I plan to enter Belmont University’s Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program.  I hope to one day be an occupational therapist and eventually run my own private clinic.

Carlen Groce is more than just a wonderful teacher.  Ms. Groce brought more intrigue to the subject of English than most any of my teachers before her because unlike their monotonous repetition of basic mechanics, she truly makes English interesting.  She was the first teacher to really make me love English class (a subject I have continued to love love ever since), for she teaches her students to realize the limitlessness of words, both written and spoken.  Encouraging.  Humorous.  Inventive.  Original.  That is Ms. Groce.

Lance Wilson really opened up the doors to allow me to discover my passion for biology.  He knew the material really well and was always enthusiastic to answer my questions.  His humor is really subtle and cheery, but it’s always appreciated.  Without him, I don’t think I would ever be so adamant in my decision to study biology in college

Catherine Cain makes the learning experience challenging, but FUN!  She’s one of the loudest teachers and she’s so passionate about every aspect of psychology.  She knows exactly what she is talking about psychology or otherwise.  I even believe that she can run the school-FOR REQAL.  She has influenced my decision to continue psychology classes in college.
