Summit High FAQ's

Published February 17, 2011

Williamson County's newest high school will open its doors to students in August.  Located on Twin Lakes Drive in Spring Hill, Summit High School will serve ninth and tenth grades only its first year.  Below is a list of frequently asked questions that parents might find helpful.

My child will attend Summit High School next year.  Since the school is still under construction and there isn’t a Summit main office, how do I stay informed about Summit?

The best way to stay informed about Summit is to continually visit the school website at www.wcs.edu/shs.  The website is updated multiple times a week.  There is a "Stay Informed" section on the website that provides the opportunity to sign up for email updates.  Also, make sure your contact information at your student's current school is up-to-date so that all call-outs and emails are received.

Will JROTC be offered at Summit in 2011-2012?

At this point, that is still to be determined.  While there has not been a definitive "no" regarding JROTC, we are skeptical that Summit will garner a program in the first year.  The appropriate application was filed within one month of Dr. farmer's hiring.  That application places Summit on a list of requesting schools, but the decision is solely up to the U.S. Army JROTC officials.  In an effort to show commitment, we will provide the U.S. Army with the number of students that requested JROTC as a course for the 2011-12 school year.  Additionally, information has been obtained from college recruiters that assure us that one year without a program does not necessarily minimize a student's opportunity to obtain a JROTC scholarship.

Our child took drafting as a freshman at Independence, how closely will Project Lead The Way Introduction to Engineering Design align with traditional CAD courses?  Will PLTW Engineering be an appropriate area of focus if my child wants to major in engineering in college?

We have assurances that the first CAD course in a more traditional drafting program that will be beneficial to the PLTW Engineering program at Summit.  We also have been assured that CAD will count as one of the three elective focus credits in conjunction with two additional PLTW Engineering courses.  The STEM Engineering program that PLTW affords the students at Summit will certainly be an excellent preparatory course for college engineering.  Information found at www.pltw.org will further convey this notion.

Will Summit offer students ample tutoring opportunities?

Summit High School will offer tutoring before, during and after the school day.  Tutoring can be scheduled individually between student and teacher.  There will be some mandatory tutoring for those students who are showing a decline in their academic markings.  At specific points in the year such as during standardized tests, students may be offered broader tutoring opportunities sponsored by Summit High School.

Why are there some courses that are offered at Independence High School and Page High School that are not offered at Summit High School?

Course offerings and teachers are based on the number of students in the building.  Therefore, if there are fewer students in a school, there is less allocated funding to offer courses and hire teachers.  Also, since Summit will only have freshmen and sophomores in the first year, there are upper level courses that are not pertinent to the course offerings list.  As the school grows in student population, the diversity in courses will also grow.

In order to volunteer at Summit, is a background check necessary?

The standard operating procedures to volunteer in Williamson County Schools will apply at Summit High School.  Therefore, the tier level that you want to volunteer will determine whether or not you must go through the background check requirement.  More information regarding this issue can be found on the district's website by going to  http://www.wcs.edu/volunteer/volunteer_home.htm.

Will students be allowed to walk and/or ride bikes to school? If so, will accommodations such as sidewalks, crosswalks, reduced speed limits, and stop lights be implemented to ensure students are safe crossing Buckner Lane?

Yes, students will be able to walk and/or ride their bikes to Summit.  The City of Spring Hill has not authorized the lowering of the speed limit on Buckner Lane.  Their reasoning is that the school is located so far off of Buckner and they would prefer to keep speeds at current levels.  With regard to walking, construction plans do not incorporate sidewalks on Twin Lakes Drive.  However, improvements will be made to Twin Lakes Drive this spring.  Moreover, there are sidewalks on Spring Station Drive that lead into the high school student parking and entrance to the high school.  Spring Station is the closest roadway to any subdivision near the school.  The speed limit on Spring Station is 15 miles per hour.  Hopefully, drivers will obey the speed limit.

What sports will be offered at Summit High School?  How do I find out information (such as try-outs, calendars, etc.) about a specific sport?  Will club sports be available at Summit?  If not, can I participate in a club sport at Independence?

Summit High School will offer all 19 TSSAA-sanctioned sports in year one.  As coaches are hired, they will begin the process of advertising and conducting interest meetings.  Football had an interest meeting before the Parent Night meeting on February 15.  The cheerleading interest meeting is scheduled for February 24.  It is always best to check the Summit High School website for information and announcements about sports.

Will Summit offer students opportunities to participate in clubs?

Absolutely.  In an effort to allow student input, ideas for clubs will largely be initiated by students.  The main stipulations to start up a club are as follows: ample student interest, a teacher sponsor, and completion of appropriate paperwork (i.e. constitutions, applications, etc.) for the club to be founded. In fact, there is already one example of this process occurring.  A current Independence student rezoned to Summit has already contacted Summit administration about starting a Habitat for Humanity club.  We will help her through the process of starting the club until a sponsor is identified.

Do we have to provide Proof of Residency if we are not new to the school system?

Yes.  We have begun the Proof of Residency process now by requesting families to submit their Student Enrollment Form to us.  As we move closer to this summer, you will be required to complete the Proof of Residency process required by Williamson County Schools.  In order for your child to receive their class schedule, Proof of Residency must be finalized.  For more information on this process, please visit http://www.wcs.edu/Enrollment/homepage.htm.
