Students Study Past with Dig Day

Sixth graders at Spring Station Middle School recently channeled their inner-Indiana Jones during a special project called Dig Day.
For the last few weeks, students in Amy Seago's social studies class have been studying the importance of culture and how historical information can be gathered through archaeology.
The students worked in groups as they created their own pottery artifacts, which were later buried in a secret spot outside the school. On September 10, the boys and girls set forth to recover the items during an archaeological dig.
Using the knowledge they learned in Denise Sawyer's math class, the students were able to plot the exact location of the artifacts and then carefully uncover them piece by piece.
Once students recovered all the pieces, they worked as a team to reassemble them to their original condition. The students enjoyed the experience so much they're now on a campaign to have another dig site created at the end of the year.
