Rumor Mill-4658

Published October 28, 2010

The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.  If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of IN FOCUS.  Below are some of the questions we received since our last newsletter.

Is it true that Williamson County students will have to start paying for cafeteria items like forks, spoons and condiments?

These cafeteria items are made available without additional charge to WCS students who are eating breakfast and lunch provided by the Food Service Department.  Since WCS cafeterias must maintain a balanced budget - bringing in enough money to cover expenses - the WCS Food Service Department has asked principals and cafeteria managers to work with the lunchroom monitors to educate students and parents on the coast of supplies like napkins, spoons and condiments.  The cafeterias will not deny these items to a child in need, but they will be monitoring usage in an effort to work one-on-one with students who bring their lunch but are using the items on a daily basis.

Will WCS ever consider going to a year-round or balanced calendar?

In the coming weeks, the Williamson County School Board will begin considering a calendar for next year, but year-round is not an option that was given to the Board.  As for whether or not the district would ever consider switching to a year-round calendar, there is no way for us to determine what might happen in the future.

I was curious if the new Breezeway Elementary would have all the amenities the existing schools have that were paid for through PTO funds.  For example, will all the classrooms be equipped with Smartboards?

It will mostly be up to the principal to determine which amenities the school will have.  Anytime a new school is built, the principal is responsible for the purchase of equipment, materials and supplies.  Historically, elementary principals are named mid-year and start their responsibility in early January.  Purchasing decisions will be made shortly after a principal is named.

I heard that a vote was supposed to take place on October 25 on the current head lice policy in Williamson County.  We currently are under a "no nit" policy and heard we were going to a "live lice" policy.  Is this true?

There is no truth to the rumor that Williamson County Schools held a vote October 25 to change its head lice policy.  At this time, there is no plan to change the district's current policy on head lice.
