Rumor Mill-4648

Published October 14, 2010

The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.  If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of IN FOCUS.  Below are some of the questions we received since our last newsletter.

When will the new rezoning proposal be out?  Is there any truth to the stories I am hearing that WCS wants to move anyone with a Nolensville address away from Ravenwood to Page?  That would make no sense to my neighborhood as we are 6.8 miles from RHS and 17.9 miles from Page but I keep hearing that from multiple people.  Please clarify.

At this time, no new information has been presented to the Williamson County Board of Education regarding the rezoning proposal.  Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mike Looney will present the results of the district's facility capacity study of middle and high schools at the Board of Education's October 14 work session.  The information will help complete the district-wide rezoning plan.  No new proposal is scheduled for presentation October 14, but when a proposal is complete, Williamson County Schools will issue an IN FOCUS News Flash with additional information.

I understand that WCS recently contracted with a new company to provide athletic trainers for our high school sports teams.  I have heard that many of these new trainers were working by themselves at the schools before they were professionally licensed in the state of Tennessee.  Is this true?

Baptist Sports Medicine was awarded the contract for providing athletic trainers to all high schools starting July 1, 2010.  They hired several individuals from out of the state who had to apply for a Tennessee license, which is a process that typically takes four to six weeks to complete.  For any applicant who did not have a Tennessee athletic trainer's license, Baptist Sports Medicine provided a supervising athletic trainer to provide care to athletes during practice or games.  All staff that was hired was always certified by the national certifying organization, and all athletic trainers on staff have been in practice for a minimum of three full years.

If Pinewood Elementary is closed, where will these students be reallocated to?  Fairview and Westwood are already at maximum capacity and keep splitting the classrooms to add new teachers with the current enrollment?  Lunch lines are so long, the last few children in line barely have 10 minutes to eat.  How can these schools possibly absorb more?

Students who currently attend Pinewood Elementary School will be rezoned to Fairview Elementary and some Fairview Elementary students will be rezoned to Westwood Elementary.  With the rezoning, Fairview Elementary and Westwood Elementary each will have room to grow by approximately 200 students.
