Published September 30, 2010
The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating. If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of IN FOCUS. Below are some of the questions we received since our last newsletter.
I heard that there will be no grandfathering with the new zoning. We bought our home less than a year ago because it was zoned to Hillsboro Elem/Middle. I drive my kids to/from school and would like to continue to attend Hillsboro after the rezoning. My children will be rezoned to Heritage. Will they be allowed to attend Hillsboro through the grandfather rule next year?
There has been no change to the Williamson County School Board's grandfather provision. Rising fifth graders, rising eighth graders and rising junior and seniors are eligible. Requests should be submitted may May 15 of the preceding year. Select this LINK to read more.
I would like to know if WCS are intending to go to a uniform look much like the Metro schools?
According to Williamson County School Board policy, individual schools have the right to adopt a uniform dress code. At this time there is no plan to change Board policy and institute a district-wide uniform dress code. Select this LINK to read more on the Board's policy on Dress Code.
I heard during the open house at BHS that they were considering raising the percentage again this year that the exams counts towards the final grade. It was raised last year from 10 to 15 percent and I heard that the proposal was to raise it to 20 percent this year. Is this true?
Yes, the percent exams count will change. Last year, it was raised from 15 percent to 20 percent and will remain at 20 percent this year. Next year, it will rise from 20 percent to 25 percent. This is not specific to just Brentwood High School. It is in accordance with Williamson County's Board Policy regarding semester and final examinations. The changes to 20 percent and then to 25 percent were and are being made to keep WCS policy in agreement with the State Board of Education policy regarding End of Course examinations. I have heard that WCS is planning to move sixth grade to the elementary schools. Is this true?
There had been some discussion about creating K-6 schools across the district, however it was discovered during the recent district-wide rezoning process that our facilities would not be able to accommodate a K-6 elementary configuration.
Is it true that Brentwood High is considering stopping the practice of letting seniors opt out of finals if they have an A in the class? If so, what is the proposed timeframe?
There is no truth to this rumor. Brentwood High School will continue to follow the Williamson County School Board policy for exam exemptions.
There will be a lot of change for Oak View and Winstead families if the proposed Edulog zoning plan is approved. If passed, these students and families will be split through middle school and high school. According to the latest Oak View Middle School update, it is scheduled for a 2012 opening. Has this changed and if not, how will this affect the new zoning? Will students from Winstead continue to Heritage Middle or be rezoned again to Oak View Middle?
Williamson County Schools purchased the property near Oak View anticipating future growth in the area. Currently, the district's Five Year Capital Outlay Plan shows completion of the school in 2013. This plan is reviewed annually by both the Board of Education and the County Commission and is subject to change each year. We cannot give a definitive timetable for construction on this property at this time.
