Lunch Menus Contain Nutritional Information

Published October 28, 2010

Choose a school lunch of a chicken fillet sandwich, a serving of corn and a glass of milk, and you’ll consume 67 grams of carbohydrates. Carb counts for every item on the elementary and middle school breakfast and lunch menus are now listed on the WCS Food Service Department's WEBSITE under the heading of Nutritional Information.

In addition to listing the amount of carbs in each food item, Food Service has also added complete nutritional information, which includes calories, sodium and protein. Officials hope the info will help students eat a balanced meal.

"We think this will be useful tool for parents who want to help their children develop healthy eating habits," said WCS Food Service Director James Remete. "It’s been difficult in the past for parents and students to calculate carbohydrates, so now all the information is available, giving the students more choices."

A carbohydrate is the main nutrient in food that provides energy. One serving is 15 grams, according to the American Diabetes Association Carbohydrate Exchange List. Most children should eat about 45-75 grams of carbohydrates per meal for a balanced diet.
